THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT

If Reagan were alive, healthy and able to run for a third-term, would you vote for him against Obama?

I'm assuming this means the constitution has been amended to allow a third term.

Not even a question, of course I would.

I would vote for virtually anyone over obama

I don't think you guys entirely understand Reagan.

In 1980, the economy was in full recession, there was 12% inflation and double digit unemployment and the russians were literally pissing into our teeth.

People would talk about whether or not they wanted to live thru the coming nuclear war and how they could get canadian citizenship

the foul stink of the vietnam war disaster was still hanging over the country and the stock market had flatlined for 13 years. 13 fucking years

everything was complete gloom and doom,

Then Reagan showed up and the country took off like a rocket. it was the most remarkable thing, a complete 180 degree spin

there was a huge upswell of confidence and patriotism, the country completely changed.

it was flat out incredible.

Reagan was the hero. A true hero.

The entire country was infused with Reagan's optimism and belief in American exceptionalism.

And to the 6% that said they would vote for Obama - rot in hell, you traitors.

Close, but not quite.

I'm just curious as to why folks don't tear into Reagan for his record like they do Romney.

Reagan:
  • Raised taxes 11 times, more times than he cut taxes.
  • Signed the largest tax increase in US history up to that time.
  • Tripled our national debt.
  • Took America from being the top creditor nation of the world to being the top debtor nation of the world.
  • Granted amnesty to 5 million illegal aliens, thus encouraging even more illegal immigration.
  • Banned civilians from owning new machineguns.
  • Promised to abolish the Dept. of Education while running for President, yet Dept. of Ed spending DOUBLED during his Presidency.
  • Doubled our foreign aid spending.

Despite this though, Reagan was infinitely better than the alternatives (Carter/Mondale).

If you don't like what Romney did as Governor of MA before running against Obama, what did Reagan do as Governor of CA before running against Carter?

Well while Governor, Reagan passed $1Billion/year in tax increases for his state ($7billion/yr by today's standard) and four times larger than any previous governor of CA had ever passed up to that time. He jacked up state income tax, sales tax and corporate taxes in CA.

In fact, Governor Reagan raised state taxes more than any other governor in any state had ever done in history up to that point. What did he get from all those tax increases? More gov't spending.

But the important point is this:

Governor Reagan was infinitely better than Carter.

Governor Romney is infinitely better than Obama.

Voting for Reagan after seeing what he had accomplished in his first two terms would be a no-brainer. I think everyone would.

If he was just a candidate who had been a governor previously, there are many on this site that would not have voted for him...if they are being intellectually honest. They would have voted 3rd party or stayed home.

I dunno about that. It's a legitimate question whether Jimmy Carter would do worse than Barack Obama given the present conditions. I think he would put up a pretty good fight.

The main difference being that Reagan was an unabashed patriot. He didn't think patriot was a bad word. This was CLEAR from his 1964 convention speech, his speeches between then and candidacy, and all through his campaigns. His record to that point tipped the balance in favor of conservative, but he was clearly a patriot. We know Zero is anything but a patriot from his record and his speeches and his affiliations and everything else he does and says - He's walks the walk of an unabashed internationalist who puts every other country's interests ahead of our own. Romney is less than clear either way and has no service to bolster an unspoken claim, which is concerning but at least there are more channels to influence him to the right than exist with the current activist administration.

Is Romney better than Obamao? Clearly. But a small turd being better than a big turd just means less turd, not absence of turd. Everytime I see "Reform and Replace Obamacare" I want to kick Romney in the nuts - It's indicative of a big government, progressive "lite" mindset. A Donald Duck cartoon loop quacking through four years might be a better option than either of the candidates if the loop could just veto everything mechanically and no justices die or retire in that timespan.
If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace... May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity
forget that you were our countrymen. - Samuel Adams
