*DISCLAIMER… I KNOW VELOCIRAPTORS WERE SMALLER. SO THIS IS CLOSER TO A UTAH RAPTOR, SIZE WISE.*   So don't beat me up over it

So my 7yr old daughter is BIG into dinosaurs and wants to be a paleontologist.  I ask her "what happens if we make a dino like I did the big daddy suit?"  She says a Raptor would be cool and so it begins.  I used the same principle as I built my Big Daddy suit. Nice thing is, this raptor is for display…whew

Now I had no measurements or scale drawings to go after, just pics and one of her toy raptor to use as a model.

Bought 2 pieces of pink foam insulation from Home Depot.  A 1" thick piece and  2, ½" think pieces

Drew the profile out and then cut it

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/596bcded.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/7fc256d0.jpg

Same for the legs and arms, then glued those pieces to the profile piece and got a rough idea on height, length, and stance

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/cd5fa25e.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/58240a06.jpg

Once that was done, I now had to cut pieces to fill out its overall shape.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/26dafd66.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/d7b06f30.jpg

Heres my reference

Body done

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/8328f622.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/77fddbb6.jpg

Next I filled the space w the Expanding Foam. I used poster board to make the depth shallower for filling, saved me money in buying a bunch of cans. Once it was all dry, I trimmed it and sanded to shape

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/27fef8a2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/81ca64cb.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/f02c1376.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/b17ec087.jpg

Started on legs. Trimmed the thighs and same for the calf and shin area. I glued in a PVC pipe in the thighs for support and did the whole legs in pink foam.  Once glued into place, trimmed them with my carving knife and then gave it a final sanding.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/85b00ae0.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/d66ae875.jpg

The feet were a PITA to do

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/526835a4.jpg

Starting to look like something

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/8e55833e.jpg

Arms were done in same principle as the legs. All finished with the shape, and foam and ready to coat it

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/cb474b93.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/bae10c4e.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/cdcf7c77.jpg

Covered it in paper-mache and then put a coat of drywall joint compound over the whole thing. Was going to use plaster, but it just got to damn heavy

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/d5632c5d.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/8dce6041.jpg

After the compound was dry, sanded it and started to paint. I used Satin Interior paint from Lowes. They actually had that green and tan and red in the clearance shelve. They were tinted wrong for the customer, so I got all the paint for $6

Painted the typical 2 tone

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/617bdf28.jpg

Added the red stripes   (the pillow penguin is there to save my head from hitting the duct)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/540c1f67.jpg

I did the eyes out of a ping pong ball cut in half and then covered in clay, the brow and "eye socket" is all clay. Same for the teeth.

Some small detailing and dry brushing and called it done. I added the black and white outline to the stripes to make it more defined

Finished and in the living room for the time being

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/e87bde85.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/453a8457.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/2608da5b.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/571f6257.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/e434cc32.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/f136c9e6.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v469/corvette01/638c0500.jpg

The stick will be painted and made into a fake plant for concealment

So there you have it. Worked on it couples hrs a day, few times and week. At that pace it was around a 2month project  and set me back $98

Once I get it in the basement, I'll pose it next to the Big Daddy for a epic looking battle scene.
VERY cool!!

Cute kid + project with dad = ultimate win!

Did your daughter do the entire project while you sat in your easy chair with a cold one?

At any rate it is awesome!

Exactly!

Halloween is still a few months away...plenty of time to put the Velociraptor on wheels and have your daughter drag it around while trick-or-treating.  That would scare the shit out of the other kids!

Your daughter will remember that forever

One day, in the distant future, your daughter will face some sort of crisis or life challenge. As she takes on that challenge, she will get strength knowing that she is worthwhile-because her Father's unconditional love proves it.

Well done Dad. As you know, this is about a lot more than the model.

To answer a few comments:

Yes, I will probably get some pics of the wife posing with the raptor… I don't have a Spaz or 12ga, but a AR will work. That will be posted in the BOTD

I thought about fiberglas, but I was concerned on how to not have the mesh texture. Don't know how to get away from that.
Plus the cost of FG and resin.

I know feathers were involved on the real ones, but hey, its my first

I still have Ol Big Daddy downstairs and looking good
