That signal is pure class. Echos of the Empire. Makes me want to don my foreign service helmet and fondle my Martini-Henry.

I look at pics of the Falklands War, and it just baffles me that the RMs weren't wearing body armor or brain buckets.  Such different times, and I clearly remember watching it unfold on the evening news at the time.

Gunny the Royal Marines at the time were issued the fiberglass parachute helmets that offered no ballastic protection. Just a crash helmet really.

While it's debatable whether the British forces are as effective as U.S. forces, what isn't debatable is they outshine us in audacity and style.

Case in point would be the Paras at Arnhem when the Germans sent over a soldier to negotiate and the Paras told him we couldn't accept their surrender as we didnt have enough men to handle them all

They were big on berets too, it would seem.  Even their tank crews wore berets inside their MBTs until fairly recently (at least the first Gulf War).  That's absolutely nuts IMHO.

Tradition, I suppose.

They're well trained.  There's only 8,000 or so Royal Marines, but they are trained to a higher standard, IMO.

I have a friend that was a RM for the first part of whatever they called OIF.  He got out as a cpl and enlisted in the USMC.  He went through the MARSOC entry process, and easily passed.

"That was easy" (I had to laugh when he said that because it reminded me of Eric Idle talking to the bridge troll) he said to me one night over a couple of cold ones.  "It wasn't the physical part, but whether I'd fit in with that lot".  Of course, they thought highly of him, but he didn't know it at the time.  1/9 sure as hell didn't want him to leave-they tried to keep him (he was a very good squad leader, and his sense of humor was outrageous- totally amusing).

You can find him on Youtube taking the "cinnamon challenge" with his wife and trying not to puke.  This is an alcohol-related incident, of course.

I was on the RFA Sir Bedevere in the N Arabian Gulf with the Royal Marines. We used it as a platform for our boats. Sir Bedevere was hit by a bomb during thenFalklands. They decommed her right after I went home. The RMs are a great bunch and treated us well.

Why not?  I thought you guys could own things like AR-15s and G36s?  What's the difference?

They're like evil and stuff where as AR15s and G36s and SIG55x are just semi evil.

Make sense? No? To me either but unfortunately it's the law.
