THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Anyhow, the doctor says that he has about 4 months left to live. But who really knows? But the remarkable thing about it all is my father's attitude. Usually, he complains, moans and bitches. But not this time. This time he is very calm and he has told everyone what he wants to do. He told my sister that he wants her to take all of his books before he dies and he is already deciding where she should put his furniture and other belongings! I spoke to my dad on the telephone and I told him that I would fly out east next week to see him. I asked him if there was anything that he wanted to do; however, he told me that he could not talk in private because my brother in law was around. So I told my father to talk in Afrikaans and he did. He told me that he was simply too sick to do anything, but he explained it all in a way that was actually funny. It is hard to explain but the whole experience has a lighter side. Here we have a man who is bravely planning his final trip. I would have to say that this is one of the bravest things I have ever seen. |

You have my condolences, Fluffy.
Looks like he's going out on his own terms. Anything more I can add will sound either hollow, or sappy. Sounds like he is a remarkable man. |

My Grandfather was old school and tough as nails. He was on his death bed with Cancer and knew it was only a matter of time. Had a great attitude about it and a sense of humor as well.
My condolences to you and your family. Hang tough for your father. |

I'm sorry to hear about your father. I do have to give him props for wanting to go out on his terms. The fact that he can keep a positive attitude and find humor in things is a great testament to his strength.

I only hope I can go out like that. You get to thinking about it more when you approach 60.
Try and stay strong, sometimes I think it is easier for the person leaving than those around them. |

Anyway, make sure he gets proper pain medications.. Last 2 weeks were VERY VERY painful for my grandfather. Anyway, nothing is ever sure in medicine, and I wish him the best ! |

My grandmother went out in similar fashion from the same affliction. She was able to plan her own funeral down to her clothing and favorite hymns. The family was able to prepare emotionally and spend her remaining time with each other at her bedside telling stories, laughing, and crying. Sometimes it is nice to know how much time you have left to say goodbye as opposed to wishing you could have seen someone one more time.

I would like to tell you guys a little about my father. As a young man, my father was extremely handsome. He had perfect white teeth, violet blue eyes and he had an excellent physique. He used to box, play rugby and swim. Anyhow in 1952 my father traveled to America on the Queen Mary. And on that ship was none other than Elizabeth Taylor. My father and Liz were talking and getting to know each other when he told her that she was "a lousy actress". It is hard to believe but he actually told her that. Afterwards Elizabeth walked away in a huff. I would imagine that every guy in the whole world would have wanted a chance to get to know Elizabeth Taylor back in 1952. And my father tells her that she's a lousy actress. |

Your father is a great man, spend all the time you can spare being with him, or talking to him on the phone. Your post hit to close to home, my dad passed away from pancreatic cancer 6 years ago. He was taking care of my step-mom who was in the final stages of cancer herself. A month after she had passed away, we found out dad had been hiding the fact that he was feeling ill. He was then diagnosed with cancer.
Like your dad, my dad accepted it and went about getting his business in order. The only "positive" to come from the experience was the fact that me and dad really talked. He was always my dad, but I got to know him as a person.
Again sorry to hear the news, and my condolences to you and your family. |

My sincerest condolences to you, your father, and your family.
Your father sounds like a brave man who is facing the end of his life with dignity. I do not know precisely in what ways the system differs in Canada, but I will say that physicians who specialize in palliative medicine can do remarkable things with pain control at the end of life such that he can still be awake enough to enjoy the company of his family, and I urge you to see if he can perhaps be attended to by a physician who specializes in palliative medicine. |

I hope when my life's journey comes to that fork in the road I approach the end with as much dignity and bravery as your father is showing. In my line of work I've seen hardened killers chained to a bed in ICU crying for loved ones who will never come see them. I will include your father in my daily prayers that his journey is peaceful.

Update: My father is in hospital and he has lost his mind. He does not recognize my brother and he says things that don't make sense. His foot is turning black and he is far weaker than he was last month. I know he will die soon. I only hope that it will be soon because I just can't believe the suffering he has gone through. My dad used to box and he told me that before a bout he was always scared. He said that after the fight began and after he tasted blood in his mouth, that he would calm down and that he would know that everything would be ok. Well it is time for the Eternal Referee to stop this fight. My fighter has done enough. |

My girlfriend's grandfather and aunt have both been treated for prostate and breast cancer respectively and her insurance agent is in treatment now as well. Fucking fuck cancer. |

Although through it I got to know him as a Man and not only as my father. Now I realize how much I am like him, and I am very proud to be his son. Your father will live on in you, and in the end it will be a comfort to know he is at peace. |
