Former NASA astronaut and "the first mother to fly in space” Dr. Anna Fisher took a veiled shot at President Obama
and his space policies Tuesday during an interview with a local anchor
at Dulles International Airport where Discovery was making its last
flight before being retired at the Smithsonian National Air and Space
Museum.

Fisher pulled a little boy named Ethan out of the crowd who was
dressed up as a NASA pilot and asked him if he wanted to be an astronaut
when he grew up, which he answered in the affirmative.

"Any advice for Ethan, an aspiring astronaut?” she asked her mom.

"Study Russian,” Fisher quipped, to laughter.

I'm going to miss the Shuttle that is for sure. It's going to be difficult to go on without the program.

Thanks to Budget cuts Orion most likely will NOT be ready in 2013.

Sucks, because right now we really are dependent on the Russians for flight to the ISS.

Curiously enough, in the 60's and the 70's and part of the 80's, that was not a joke, but serious.

If one reads the books at the time, such as Martin Caiden's Cyborg, looks at the movies, such as Firefox and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, it was expected that an American astronaut would know Russian.

So while it was taken as a joke today, I have to wonder if there was any level of serious intent in it.

Of course, on the other hand, it could be indeed be the difference in generations. Found that out a little today when a young movie audience reacted entirely to a showing as they had been raised and conditioned......and it was an aspect that I knew nothing about.

Uhhh...

That's solid advice. It helps you get selected for the astronaut program, and it helps when in. We have been doing joint missions for a long, long time now.

The only reason I have ever met any astronauts is related to that very language.

With all their inefficiencies, NASA would have been a better choice than green energy.

I've also noticed that when liberals are giving money away, a billion or two is no big deal. For any project they don't like though, it's a nation breaker. I'm sure NASA would have loved even half of what was blown on green energy.

Taming NASA was never about saving money. It was about crippling American achievements and nationalistic pride. After all we wouldn't want the lesser achieving countries to feel bad about themselves, would we.

I'm convinced Obamas misguiding attempt at global social justice is going to end up killing more people than all of history's wars combined.

We're scheduled for a 2014 uncrewed launch. NASA has a full scale test version right now. Lockheed Martin is building Orion as we speak.

Sadly for me I know some of the middle level NASA managers involved in the new program. I have honest doubts that I'll live to see another American manned launch vehicle ever leave the pad and make it to orbit. Too many of them have never participated in a successful project that put hardware in orbit. 30 years at NASA here. Maybe, just barely maybe one of the commercial outfits will learn the lessons they'll need to learn and be able to pick up the slack. For all it's flaws, the Shuttle had evolved into a pretty solid truck.

Of course, heaven forbid we should short viable 'Green' efforts like Solyndra to piss money away on maintaining a WORKING space launch platform.

I really wish I could go inside SpaceX and some of the other commercial efforts and find out if there's any steak behind the sizzle.

I've heard that they've decided not to go back to the moon and now just aiming at Mars, which I doubt will ever happen. However, we're going to have manned space flights again at some point.

Cool. I learned in an animated documentary from Colorado that Mexico will take a whale to the moon for $250. Humans are much smaller, we should be able to go for $10.

The point is that it has been proven that building things on your own dollar, hoping that the government will pick it up is a LOSER. Doing things on a government's promise is a fool's folly. Administrations come and go, policies are changed, and even if someone were to be successful in building such, since they really have no guarantee that the sayers of the offer would pay up, just as they might sell it to the US, so they might sell it to someone else to get their cash or even make a profit.

Growing up, the space program was one of the reasons I became an engineer.

Now, instead of spending money on something that makes kids aspire to better themselves, we're spending it to pay people to be lazy, unproductive, and aspire to be nothing more than homebound breeders who leech off those who have the gall to try and do better.

When Discovery touched down, I wept. For that touchdown not only signalled the end of an American staple, but of a huge part of the American dream. It's a deathblow to future dreamers, tinkerers, and engineers.

No longer will kids pretend to be astronauts, or space explorers. They'll pretend to be drug dealers, pimps, and whores. Living off the governments dime. Fucking Dems. Fucking socialists. Fucking leeches. And noone in charge sees that, or cares.

SpaceX has put 3 rockets in orbit so far, and they are scheduled to dock with the ISS on May 3. They have spent about a billion total, mostly private funded; while NASA spent about 50% more on the shuttle, per launch.

Is putting more money to big government solutions really a good idea, especially in a recession?

Perhaps I should have been more clear, but the topic I was referring to was building a product for the government.

If the money for such has to come from Congress, one is a fool to do it on their own dollar. One either does it with the government dollar in hand or not at all.
