I am part Crow, but can prove none of it.  According to my dad, his mom was a complete racist and denied it to the day she died.  I really don't care that much about it, and I am way more proud of my English heritage.

My wife's family thought for many years that they were part Cherokee. They were told that they had a full blooded Cherokee 4x great grandmother making my wife like 1/64th Cherokee or something like that. Well they finally went through and did photo collection and genealogy work. It turns out that the 4x great grandmother was white with light hair. My wife was devastated for some reason. I think its because she had gown up and lived the last 30 years thinking she was part Cherokee. I always laughed at her over it, especially after she would pull the " I am one with nature through my Cherokee bloodline" and other cliche stuff.

Well once she found out she wasn't her attitude changed. We go to the local festivals and stuff when they have them. Get a nice hot bowl of Venison stew and hang around. Well the last one we went to there was a hawk flying around in the distance and a bunch of people were saying its a "sign". My wife like clockwork goes " Oh bull crap its just a hawk flying around we have tons of them around here". I laughed so hard that she got so cynical after she found out she wasn't Cherokee. If that had happened earlier she would have been in the "its a sign" group.

I have spent a fair amount of time with some Maidu Indians in the Sierra Nevadas in CA and some Washoe Indians in northern NV. I have done teaching and service work on some of the reservations as well. I enjoy their stories and their food. I think they are a good people. I hope they can preserve their traditions and history well.

claiming such small amounts of native ancestory is BS

if you have to break it down to such low percentages, your not really a native american, it's all for the benefits or cool factor by trying to claim native american to make them feel like they have an identity

sounds like an identity crisis, mixed people that dont really know what they are

whats so cool about having NA ancestory? every race originated from some type of tribe during Early Man era

the NA are just Early man that never advanced due to lack of exposure to other more advanced civillizations until they had contact with early explorers, now they are pretty much the same as anybody else

Skipping the Indian ancestry stuff - My mother gets all twitchy when anyone says anything bad about any Arabs or Muslim because my sons are quarter Lebanese. She's also a brainless libtard who revels in pointing out other peoples flaws while ignoring her own prejudices (against Utes, Navajos, and Mexicans primarily). But the way she somehow thinks feels that insulting fundamental Muslim terrorists reflects poorly on my wife and kids is baffling.

Racism shows itself in many ways. Overcompensating to hide their own is just one indication that a person has some ugly prejudices right under the surface (IMHO)

Mexico  and other countries in South America were primarily native americans and still have a lot of indigeneous peoples in those areas, why were the native americans in the USA almost totally wiped out? but the natives down in Mexico and South America are still going strong? seems like there are still a large amount in those areas

and many look like they have very little if any white man's blood

My fathers side is from Ontario Cali, but moved to VA in the late 30s.

I heard stories about my grandmother (who died in the late 1970s) getting very upset about the treatment of blacks in the Jim Crow/Segregation era.  Of course, this was ironic since she hated Mexicans with a passion.  She was also fluent in Spanish (not a useful skill in VA at that time).

If I was any part Indian I wouldn't admit it to anyone. Have you been to an Indian reservation lately? Most of them live like shit and the dominant trait lately seems to be laziness.

Sad part is, it's not really their fault. This is what happens when you give a people a free ride.

Not true. I know plenty of Indians who work their asses off. If they wanted to go drink when they were done, they were hanging out with the various whites who did the exact same thing.

The fractional Indians were the annoying ones. They were the kind of people who were black when that was profitbale and would claim Norwegian ancestry if they thought there was an extra welfare check in it. A friend who is a pure Muscogee put it plainly: "The eagle ain't gonna fly and the buffalo ain't gonna roam. Get a job."

It's not genetic(w/ the exception of a possible genetic link to the way the body handles alcohol).  It is the culture of the reservation.  Folks that get away from the reservation seem to do well.   It's kind of sad when you know someone that has potential, and they get sucked back in by the Rez.

Genetics are kind of interesting.   I've know people that are the same percentage Indian, one has blond hair and blue eyes, and the next looks primarily Indian.  I've known folks of 100% European decent, who get asked their tribe by Indians.

I've been making fun of these people for years. It's almost always 1/8, 1/16, or 1/32 Cherokee. I saw an interview with Johnny Depp once where he said the same thing and I had to laugh.  My dad told us the same thing when we were kids. I realize in hindsight now growing up that it was probably bullshit (whether he realized it or not).

Interesting topic.

Via the "one drop" rule, you can have the most infinitesimally small amount of black in you, but still be considered black. Also, you are NEVER asked to prove it. Where as claiming to be native american you must prove that you are. Usually proof is done from direct lineage from the original indian census' from the BIA back in the day. I've got ancestors on the Dawes and Millers rolls.

1/4 Ani-tsiskwa Cherokee - My tribal enrollment # is with the Cherokee
1/4 Mission Band Potawatomi

My other half is mixed german/english whatever.

Your percentage of tribal blood doesn't matter. There are people that are 100% that are trash,  and there are people that are 1% that would make their ancestry proud. It's what you do with it.

Honestly, I'm probably about 1/128th Cherokee. My mom's side has some family that assisted the Cherokees' forced removal out of Georgia in 1836. Later we found out that one of the people that walked the trail of tears married into our family after we moved west after the Civil War. That had to be some rough thanksgivings

It is strange that some people claim heritage like this. I'm 1/4 Apache, but I don't think much about it. My dad's stepfather is 100% pure blood Choctaw, I grew up 3 miles from the council house of the Choctaw Nation and it's still not a big deal.

Most of the "1/16th Cherokee" claims are pure bullshit, however its been passed along so people believe it.  One of the origins of the claim in the south is to cover African heritage.  "Gramma is beige 'cause she's indian, not 'cause she's 1/4 black..."

The actual indians we have out here call them "nosebleed indians" and really don't appreciate it very much.

Grew up deep in Indian country in SE OK where Native Americans are on par with, or outnumber, whites/other races.

You would think in that kind of environment you would never hear the, "I'm 1/64th Seminole, Potowatomie, whatever." But no, you heard it just as much as anywhere else I guess.

Fun story: I dated this girl for years. We were engaged and living together at one point. She was 100% Chickasaw. Except she had curly strawberry blond hair (was red originally), freckles, pale skin, and light brown eyes. How about that? Now, I won't argue the genetics and the whole, "That's impossible, she has to have some European in her" angle. I agree. But, in her family, going back over a hundred years (and that was the only photo evidence) every other generation or so a kid would be born with those characteristics. Saw the old black and white pics from frontier days. You'd see the same in modern photos of her and her family. Everybody has dark hair/skin/eyes. The 'traditional' Indian. And there she would be looking as white as possible, sticking out like a sore thumb.

She was actively involved in her cultural heritage and stuff too. Until she grew up and figured out she was never going to win any awards or recognition. Would you believe her tribe discriminated against her and others?? Turns out Indians don't like paleface looking kin to win things meant for 'real looking Indians'.

Most anthropologists and most ALL palaeontologists agree that there have been no "Full Blood" ANYTHINGS on the face of the earth in the last few thousands of years. The blood lines have been diluted for eons.

The "Great Chief" of the Cherokee tribe John Ross was actually only 1/8th Cherokee and the other 7/8th was Scottish.

I get a kick out of how so many "Native Americans" get so cocky over being a nose-bleed.
