They will attack anything smaller than them, from birds and rodents down to damn
caterpillers and dead leaves. Big and fluffy, very affectionate. Good all around cats,

'M's are on the foreheads of many cats , but Coons have a fairly heavy , fluffy coat too.. . fairly similar to the Norwegian Forest cat (the line they are rumored to have came from) .

Our girlie Maine Coon loves to be near us, especially laying across the floor at any bottle neck in the walking area.

She has a body pile in the back yard, every summer.  She has taken a squirrel and opossum.

I like my pair of Norwegian Forest cats. They act just like the coons I have had as well as the two coons at my parents house. Well one now. The three legged one just died last month at 20 years old. Spent the last 10 or so years with one back leg. He was a 4 foot long 25 pounder that leaned on everything and everyone so he didn't tip over!

Anyway another few pics of the Norwegians,
Jack Bauer pissed I woke him up.

LaPew trying to eat Jack Bauer. 4 years old and 5 months old. Hoping Jack will be Pew size. Pew is the best cat ever. He vibrates the area around him just by being there. His breathing is a whole nother story.

ETA- a few more..

Turned into this. Notice the cat is ~50-75% of kid size, and it has stayed that way for 3 years!

It is believed that the Maine Coon breed started from a Norwegian Forest Cat and a farm cat.

The Forest Cat is also susceptible to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).   It's a thickening of the heart muscles.   We lost two Maine Coons to HCM.   My dad takes them to WSU every year or two to have them tested.

Hip Dysplasia is also a problem.  We have one thats leg is not attached to his hip.   He runs around just fine.

I have a cat I believe to be part Maine coon.  He is over 14 pounds and very long, and the best cat I've ever had.
As soon as I thought he was big enough I let him outside and he unleashed hell on the local mouse mole and chipmunk population.
He's a big baby that doesn't mind all my kids and even puts up with an 8 month old son and two year old daughter.
Downside is with my maybe Maine coon is he loves to scratch stuff.  He just destroyed some clothe blinds in my master bath.

My last roommate had one. She was cute, but she disproved the notion that cats always land on their feet. That was the damn clumsiest cat I've ever seen. It would always fall of shelves, do faceplants, etc. I'm allergic to cats as all get out, but she was a neat cat. She had the most interesting vocalizations - not the usual meows you expect though she was capable of that, too.

He does.  I keep seeing people say that the cat is more like a dog.  He sure is.  He's just everybody's friend.  He sure plays like a cat though.  He's constantly attacking my legs but he's smart about it because he usually only does it if I'm in jeans.

I plan to pick him up May 17.

I got bored and cobbled together a kind of box so the kitten can be in the dog room and be able to retreat if he wants.  Plus the litter box will not be reachable by the dogs. I threw the cat tree on top and made some walkways to some shelves.  It is the office but we use it for the animal room.

I think you have that backwards.  Which animal has the door opened for them so they can go to the bathroom?  Which animal demands you take them for a walk?  Which animal demands you play with them?  You have to serve a dog otherwise it will piss in the house and tear things up.  Cats require no maintence as long as they have food, water, and a place to go to the bathroom.

I have owned 4 M.C's obtained from 3 different breeders. They get along great with other cats, are VERY vocal and are doglike in their attachment to humans. However it has been my observation that the breed itself is unfortunately not the healthiest. A very limited number of MC's formed the foundation breeding pool and as a result health issues are
fairly prevalent . As another poster stated the breed is prone to HCM. Two of mine have murmurs, one had a inclusion cyst that wrapped around his heart and pressed against his lungs. Another had to have his colon removed. Finally one had to have all of its teeth pulled due to severe gingivitis (not due to lack of oral higene, had condition since birth). 10 years of ownership has cost an estimated 30 grand in vet care. Not complaining, as I do love the breed, but I probably will not get any more.
