Looks like I can get either for about $900-1000. Which one, and why? I don't want an M1A or a 308 AR variant.

Spend a few hundred more, and get an AR10. I'm a FAL fan, but acknowledge that the AR10 is better...

What are you, stupid? FAL. Plus 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 |

Of the two , a FAL .
The AR for precision work , but the FAL for a battle rifle |
|
Wasn't the G3 invented because the Germans couldn't get the FAL?
I vote FAL. |

I've already got an STG-58, an M1A, and an AR-10. My next .308 will be another FAL, but mostly because I want a Para Congo model..
One of these days I'll get an NFA HK trigger pack, and then I'll look at G3 variants. Always wanted an HK51.... In any case I wouldn't really want a PTR-91, so there's my answer. |

I'm a big fan of HK roller locked weapons, I don't really like my PTR 91 all that much, I vote FAL.

In my defense, I've sunk like $3000 into building this, to include custom wood, handguards, receiver, lower has been restamped, and a myriad of one off repros: http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm15/jdubya87/Quantico08069.jpg But for the life of me, its really really hard trying to justify the money to have it built, which I imagine will be another $500 to $1000 for park, assembly, headspacing, barrel work (cross threading metric barrel to use original flash hider...). I could say screw it now, sell the parts, buy a complete rifle, and likely have funds for ammo and mags to boot. Well to your credit, it's F'N beautiful. ETA: First post is gospel. |

G3 is a brass destroying machine. If you like reloading, go FAL.
FALs are a lot easier to modify and work on. |

Quoted: Fusil Automatique Leger http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn150/beamy85/DSAImbelFAL001.jpg I've kicked around a PTR91 but I really don't like how much the fluted chamber eats brass, plus the FAL is just pure awesome It doesn't. |
|
Well, I have to go against the general direction here.. PTR for me. Easy to mount and take off scopes with the HK claw mount. German surplus night vision is everywhere and cheap. Scope change in 5 seconds works for me. It's very accurate with good ammo (reloads for me).
It doesn't eat brass either, that's a myth. At least I reload my PTR brass without issues. CDNN has them for $999. Great value for the cash imho. Having said that I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Just fondle them both and go with the one that works for you. |

G3 is a brass destroying machine. This is not a problem. Mostly because your brass lands somewhere in the next county. |

For some reason I could never really dig the FAL. They are easier on brass than a G3, and a bit easier to clean. Still prefer a G3.

jdubya87, listen to me: Get the FAL!!!!
I traded mine away years ago, and I still regret the decision. I still have a case of 7.62 ammo, waiting for it's replacement. Semper Fi |
|
I'm just sick of looking at the damned thing in the garage. Not like I"m going to recap my money, so I guess I'll just build it. If I hate it, I can sell it and buy the PTR. If I like it, I'll buy a carbine para FAL and the PTR when I have money to burn.

Be careful with that. You don't want to scratch it before it goes back in the safe. |
|
Quoted: Get BOTH. I did this and figured out the FAL is better. It's OK though I got the PTR for $695 and sold it for a profit. |
|
Did the ARFCOM and got both! PTR-91 and a DSA FAL .308 carbine. Next on the list is the M1A.
|
|
The HK/PTR will be more reliable with all types of ammo and it works 100% right away unlike the FAL which needs to be set correctly for the type of ammo used. The HK/PTR is also more reliable. Easy choice....the HK/PTR.
|
|
Every PTR I have shot is picky about ammo. NOT a battle rifle quality.
I have an M1A for when I feel like shooting irons, I had an AR-10 that was not very wieldly so I sold it, I want a FAL carbine bad. |
|
You are probably unlikely to be in the sort of conditions where the FAL really shines. But I cannot think of another rifle I enjoy shooting more. Love that ka-chunk sound of the action reciprocating; so much better than the "sproiiinnnggg". Damn thing sounds like a giant watch when it cycles a round. I love taking it apart and appreciate the amount of engineering that went it it, the terrific machining and fabrication and so on. The bolt is a thing of beauty. Have someone who knows what they are doing help you with the extractor the first time if you get a wild hair to really take it apart. The ergonimics will either work or not. For me, the FAL fits like it was made to and the HK feels clunky but others report the opposite. That being said, if I could do it all over (and I'm in CA so I can't...), I'd go with an AR10 for a little more money.
