Saw this courtesy of Military Times GearScout blog.  Anyone have any idea what these five patterns are?  I'm assuming Crye Precision is Multicam.  What are the other four?

Four industry partners and one Government team will produce camouflage uniforms for field trials and other evaluations in FY2012:

1.      ADS, Inc. (teamed with Hyperstealth, Inc.) – Virginia Beach, Virginia
2.      Brookwood Companies, Inc- New York, NY
3.      Crye Precision, LLC – Brooklyn, NY
4.      Kryptek, Inc. – Fairbanks, AK
5.      Government pattern developed at U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC), Natick, MA

I think #5 might be the ACU (UCP) pattern with more brown mixed in:

They should just throw all the patterns into a hat and pick at random, then we can all hate on the choice and get on with our lives.  I just saved the Army tons of $.

2) Were do I report the fraud, waste and abuse on this one?

I'm glad the BDUs/DCUs are gone.  Wash and wear is the way to go.  We should have adopted the Marine uniform, though.  Maybe in a different pattern.  But the cut is better.

So we have gone from every branch using essentially the same Woodland BDU to every branch having their own special duds...granted, some are cooler than others but is it really cost effective or necessary?

I see no problem with an OD/woodland BU garrison uniform. Lose the velcro, It looks more professional.

Beyond that.. we already have enough dudes running around in multicam. It doesn't make any sense, but whatever.

Would it not make sense to pick a solid color for the uniform and armor carrier, and just swap out pouches, helmet covers, and knees elbow pads in different patterns?

Would that not be cheaper than different uniforms?

Would that not make more sense than different uniforms with solid color gear?

Yet somehow the IDF makes due with its same old puke green, from urban to deserts to mountains to forests and everything in between.

I'm not a raging Israel fan, but I think they do show that we could have stayed with WW2-era uniforms and it wouldn't have made a substantive difference.

The accessories cost more than the uniform does.

Hence the single pattern.

The Marines use brown for the same reason.

But the uniform you wear in garrison need have no bearing on the uniform you wear to war.

That's the way it was for decades: camo was for field/combat use only. I believe woodland was adopted for day-to-day wear partly as a way to boost morale. (Kind of like the black beret fiasco a few years ago.)

I would like to go back to the BDU/DCU patterns but in the ACU or MARPAT cut.  The new USAF uniforms (ABU) is nothing more than a wash-and-wear BDU with a different pattern and a few extra pockets.  They don't add any versatility to those of us that don't work in an office.

the woodland BDU pattern violates most of the principles of effective camo and always comes in towards the bottom during testing

Agreed.  But I think a lot of the Army disagrees.

When I was in ROTC my MS advisor was going to give a formal address to the Navy/Marine ROTC unit at the college I attended (my battalion was on a different campus and I was cross enrolled).  It took me 10 minutes of polite and respectful talk to convince the Major that his Class A's were more suitable than his BDUs.

I like the old Vietnam era khaki Army Class B.
