I've never really hated it per se, until this year. I DO believe in Jesus, and I celebrate his birth and sacrifice all year round. I DO however hate the commercialization, the hustle and bustle, the drama of it all, and mostly all the crap that has been happening surrounding my life and my loved ones around this holiday season. It really, really sucks is an understatement.

Love Jesus, hate Christmas.

It is just an excuse to make me spend $1000+ for crap that people really don't need.

It's the commercialization.

I absolutely Hate it.

Every year Christmas reminds me of just how far our culture and society has gone off the rails, and by virtue of how absolutely horrified I am every year, that disgust and chaos reminds me of just what really IS important.

Whether Christmas is to you about the birth of Jesus, or not, I think it helps to focus on what's good. Let the distasteful garbage around you...the bastardization of the holiday serve as a strong reminder to you about what's really important, and allow it to bring you peace in whatever way that is.

Breathe.

I have to remind myself sometimes.

Christmas is a wonderful holiday if you let it be.

Christmas brings out the worst in people, when it should bring out the best. That said, I hated Christmas when I was living with my family. Now, I just want to be home for the holidays, but I'm unable. If you hate Christmas, it really helps to distance yourself from it. I don't have a TV so I don't see 87 commercials per hour telling me to "buy, buy, buy." Christmas is a lot more tolerable when you kind of distance yourself from it.

I Agree with you on this. I LIKE the fact of getting together with family/friends, but at the same time, why can't ANY day be for that. Why do we need a holiday to make us get with loved ones once a yr, then the rest of the time, bicker or not contact the.
I try to live my life with peace, love and compassion everyday, I don't need this holiday to remind me of what it TRULY means and IS. .....'eh...I need to leave this alone...too buzzed and might say some COC shit....lol

Fuck it, who says you have to? You know what I have planned for Christmas? It's gonna be about 65* here, so I'm gonna ride my bike in the morning, and I'm gonna go to a party/gift exchange with a fellow Arfcommer. I spent Thanksgiving with my boss and his family. Thanksgiving was pretty nice, and Christmas will most likely be too. Don't make yourself suffer through something you don't want to. Life is too short for that shit.

That's a pretty good way of putting it.

I love Christmas. I love getting people gifts. Hell, I even like putting up decorations and listening to Christmas music...

but the mood it puts some people in is ridiculous. If you feel like you NEED to buy people gifts, don't. You're doing it for the wrong reason. If you want to then feel free to create long lines at stores that I have to wait behind.

If you're some crabby, debbie downer that's just going to bitch about this that and the other thing all day then stay home.

Meh, kinda mixed on it. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday that doesn't involve explosives, but I like buying gifts for family, I mostly get off the beaten path stuff though, nothing from a Toys 'R Us or fucking Best Buy. Typically I start sniping stuff around October, some times I have it for nearly a year in advance. Lots of Ebay stuff, oddball gift certificates and antiques. Don't really care what I get. Although I do hate the commercialization of it, if I buy anything to support stores it's from local run hobby shops or gun stores. I do tend to give quite a few Hallmark Mahogany cards at holidays though. I really like the family time, but I get gifts for fun and because I just fricking feel like it, although I don't rush out to the local Target.

Didn't get that much really this year

Brother: new repop steering wheel/horn and restored instrument cluster for his 65 Mustang project, the cluster wasn't planned but was too stupid a deal to not get it
SIL: several odd antiques for the house
Nieces: hobby-grade small r/c car(she loves my big buck stuff I bring over-I want to teach her how to drive 'em), the little one got quality wooden toys
Father: credit at the local FOB for avgas/rental time
Mother: antique oddball little Steiff bear nothing too fancy
Aunts and uncles, etc various gift cards that make them do something they like they don't do much. Most of the places I get 'gift cards' for don't have their own little emblazoned plastic cards. Mainly small shops around here that I like but don't really have a need to buy anything from them.
Only plastic crap I bought were fairly decent toys for toys for tots, a few pretty cool Nerf guns

That's about it. I spend all day doing outside sales so I tend to pick up odds and ends from all over the place over time. Christmas lets me buy shit I kind of like but don't have room for.

Being that my Christmas shopping was completed today, I promptly stopped by the LGS and finally bought myself an EAA Witness Elite Match, they've been out of stock for 6 months everywhere, just got the email Thursday they finally got some in. Hopefully I can get the Ruger SR1911 for my Valentine's present.

I recognize the symbolism, love being with my family for a few days, but HATE the commercialization. Just flatly hate it.

The gift giving is so over the top and so much the focus that it ruins the family gathering, etc. Thanksgiving seems nice because there is no gift giving.

A few grins and giggles for the OP

What Have We Done To Christmas?

© Thomas L Evans

People screaming at each other, words are cutting like a knife
Savagely they rip apart any joys they had in life.
Children crying messes made.
Clothes all stained from a day of play.
Short on money, no more credit
Can't believe how fast we spent it.
Tempers flaring, horns are blaring.
Joy is gone now, no ones caring.
Rushing home tired from driving
Wife is hurt she goes in crying.
Kids are sick from all the snow
Where did all my money go.
We plan for this every year
Faking smiles, and good cheer.
Miserable for 6 months after
Tension building no time for laughter
Next few weeks we barely eat
Buying chicken no red meat
We know it happens every time
We block the truth in our mind
Once the fighting stops a while
Children happy finally smiles.
Damage done by what was said
Hardly sleep in your own bed.
Holidays they pimp with cheer
Over and Over every year
Same old feelings of regret
Stress and anger lots of debt
Is this what this day is for
Family's torn as if by war.
Selfish people plague the earth
wanting for themselves
This day's for honor of our lords birth
Not a day of for living hell
Merchandisers and big store chains
are the ones I wanna blame
It start with TV and the ads
And getting all the newest fads
their Targets mainly kids and teens
Tools for dad and mom wants a ring
Grandma needs a new microwave
Look a sale money saved
Saved for what I'll tell you a truth
Lets stop for lunch get that corner booth
We pretend each day as we go shopping
That the prices must be dropping
People fighting over Elmo dolls
Wait a day that price will fall
Order everything online
Sure we'll save a lot of time
Blizzard hit somewhere out east
Planes are grounded for a week at least.
Panic stricken what do we do
It's not my problem I'm blaming you
Presents don't arrive in time
I gave you yours now where's mine
What the hell is going on
This isn't right it feels all wrong
I don't know much about the lord
But if I were him I'd be really sore
All these people all those gifts
All the travel taking trips
I'm just asking don't get mad
Shouldn't we all feel so bad
How many of you gave him praise
On this of all his special day.
Shame on you and shame on me
Without his birth where would we be.

Im kind of indifferent. Not really into it, but whatever.

Im not going to bash the commercialization either, but it does really bother me when it goes from crass to just fucking insane. A friend of mine works for a company that rhymes with "wells fargo," and he told me a few days ago that it was the annual worst day of the year because it was the cut off date where people can no longer cash in their retirements and have the money in time for Christmas shopping. So all day was people calling in then freaking out about how their Christmas was ruined.

Christmas is awesome!

NOBODY IS FORCING you to partake of the commercialism, or the "hustle and bustle" or any of that shit.

My wife and I don't buy each other presents, and we don't spend lots of money. We don't waste time stuck in traffic or going to the mall or any of that.

But what we do is have a great time picking a tree, and getting it home and setting it up and decorating it. My wife LOVES decorating the house for Christmas, and fills it with natural wreaths and roping, etc - and it looks really neat. It's nice to have a different feel to the house for part of the year.

What we also do is spend a lot of time and effort on baking and cooking for an awesome Christmas Eve meal. We love spending the time together in the kitchen, and really perfecting the Christmas meal, and listening to music while we are cooking and drinking. Good times. We also really like having family and friends over for a meal, where everyone gets to relax and enjoy some good food and company. No presents allowed.

I don't feel ANY stress at Christmas, and neither does my wife.

We don't spend a ton of money.*

We both have a lot of fun and enjoy the season.

I am sorry to hear that a lot of you cannot relax and enjoy it.

(* Just to clarify, the somewhat expensive semi-auto Madsen LMG I mentioned getting for myself in another thread is entirely coincidental in timing. I would have gotten that anytime it was available - it just happens to be shipping to my FFL the day after Christmas).

Brother, look here:

Luke 2

The Birth of Jesus

1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.
2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.)

3 And everyone went to their own town to register.

4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.
5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,
7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,
18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 1
9 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

There is meaning of Christmas, when we celebrate the birth of our Savior. I believe that as surely as I believe in Freedom and Liberty in all their permutations for individual men. All that madness on the roads and in the economy are distractions we ought to minimize.

I'm glad there are people that are having a nice Christmas. Better some than no one? (Keep in mind that it's really effing tough to relax around this time when you had such "normal" Christmas' in the past and all of sudden you have to suffer through some serious sh*t. But I am thankful for Jesus, and for being provided for as far as basics go, and for hope for the future.)

Really?

Shit, I'm about as religious as a sack of doorknobs... and I LOVE the Christmas season.

You need to lighten up son, or grow a heart.
The only thing that you can guess about a broken down old man... is that he is a survivor.
When you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you, and carry you where you do not want to go.

I don't really care for people outside of family and I fucking HATE the traffic and attitude that some people have. I LOVE Christmas though. Not because of gifts and shit.

Independence day FTW.

They ought to crucify the guy that came up with this holiday.

I love Christmas!

I could do without the commercialism and the marketing hype that goes with it. I don't participate in that. The gift giving has gotten out of hand.

Ideally it is a 'food' holiday, everyone gets together and feasts on a day off. How can you hate that?

Merry Christmas!

Not sure I hate it, but I definitely don't enjoy it anymore. Probably my least favorite time of the year.

Yep. I hate all that good will towards men.

See...the thing about America is that you don't have to participate in any of this if you don't want. Or, you can take the parts you like and leave the parts you don't.

Who here HATES Chrismas and all the crap with it?

Not me. I like giving stuff to my friends. And I like colored lights. And turkey.

I think that the yearly killjoys that keep saying"why can't ANY day be for getting together with family and friends?" probably wouldn't get off of their ass to organize a get together with said family and friends. Good thing you have a day ready made for it, huh?
