Chevy Volt Costing Taxpayers Up to $250K Per VehicleAnalyst: 'This might be the most government-supported car since the Trabant'Each Chevy Volt sold thus far may have as much as $250,000 in state and federal dollars in incentives behind it – a total of $3 billion altogether, according to an analysis by James Hohman, assistant director of fiscal policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Hohman looked at total state and federal assistance offered for the development and production of the Chevy Volt, General Motors’ plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. His analysis included 18 government deals that included loans, rebates, grants and tax credits. The amount of government assistance does not include the fact that General Motors is currently 26 percent owned by the federal government. |

You guys are being deceitful by not telling the entire story!
After all, GM has only sold 6,142 Volts in 2011 as of December 1. They wanted to sell 10,000 of them but they couldn't hit their sales goal for some reason (maybe because nobody is dumb enough to pay $42k MSRP for a warmed over plug-in Honda Civic clone). Once GM starts selling more Volts to its target audience (environmentally enlightened and financially foolish), that subsidy number will be quite low on a per-unit basis. That there is some big city thinkin'. |

Think I could persuade somebody in the government that the Ferrari I have my eye on is a hybrid and subsidize the first $250,000 of the price?
Maybe disconnect the ignition wire and move it five feet by turning the starter. "Look, it is a hybrid, gimme some Obama money from yo stash". |

I thought I heard GM was buying them back because they were so bad.
Not even close, they offered to buy them back if any customer had concerns over the bogus govt crash testing. Nobody is willing to give them up, they are in extreme high demand and limited production. |

How many of the "sales" are dealers turning them over to collect the subsidy before attempting to sell as used with <5 miles on the odo?

Yet another example of how well it works out when those who think they are smarter than everyone else insist on "redistribution" of money taken by force on "initiatives" and "investments" that are going to lead us to a bold new future of their crafting.
In the end the money is gone, the product they insisted on is awful and so unbelievably expensive that it boggles the mind. ...yet they will be undeterred, and everyone will think that they're smart, sophisticated people tomorrow despite numbers of examples like this. They're not actually smart, of course. What makes you "smart" in beltway terms is faith in the same hokey world view that liberals share. Sharing their faith...the central tenet of which is belief first and foremost in their own superiority...is all that's required to be smart. |

....meanwhile in South Carolina BMW just added several hundred more workers and expanded their already massive facility to make more of their X series vehicles which are apparently selling like gangbusters. Apparently they manufacture all their X series vehicles in South Carolina. This may actually make them the largest exporter of automobiles in the United States.
And they're doing it without the UAW or massive cash flow from taxpayers. Funny how that works out, isn't it? Sell cars people want and you don't need all that shit. |

Not sure if it's still going but they offered to buyback any vehicles as there are some reports of housefires started possibly due to battery issues while charging. Heard about it on the radio a week or two ago. |

Can I forgo the Volt and just collect my $250K check? At least the Volts are keeping homeless warm on the streets when they melt down into fires.

I hate to go across the grain of Arfcom GD, but the Volt has its tempting bits too. Ok, it was more tempting before GM neutered the looks of the last Volt concept cars, but still...
Using rough numbers, I could save over $150 a month on gas. Maybe a little more if I found an open outlet at the company parking garage to top it off while I'm at work. Unlike other electrics, I don't have to be paranoid about running out of charge while on the road. On the down side, even with tax breaks it is still fairly expensive... :-( |
