How much should a crown cost out of pocket after insurance?

My dentist is quoting me $288 my cost after insurance paying $290 and them "writing off" $200 what ever that means.

Go back and ask the price if they don't file the insurance and you just pay cash  for the whole deal.

Fuck yeah, that's a deal.

My wife had to have 2 crowns replaced (one was a warranty jobber.)

With insurance it cost us like $700 for the crown.

Then the dentist fucked one of them up and she needed to go for a root canal ($700+) to fix it. Oh yeah, plus a copay ($20 for anti-biotics they forgot to prescribe at the root canal and lots and lots of Vicodin.)

I saw the bill to my insurance company with my last one, and it was in the $1,200 range.  I pay half...

My last 2 crowns have been around $800 out of pocket after insurance (root channel and crown).

You guys have CHEAP dentists.

"Writing off" means they're "counting as a loss" the said amount.

$800-$1k is the pain I expect from a crown. 'Insurance' only covers 2x a year cleanings. all else is out of pocket.

With insurance for me the last one was $500 out of pocket.

Same with new glasses. I have insurance but always wind up pulling about $400 out of my wallet for a new pair.

The kicker?  Dental labs are only charging about $150-$200 to the dentist to make the crown.

Funny eh?

It's not the parts, its the labor.

Yea, I found that out later too. The whole parts vs. labor thing would be true IF the bill didn't say "crown $400".

The dentist IS giving a break! Generally, insurance covers 1/2 of the cost of a crown. "Writing off" $200 means the dentist is eating $200 of the deductable the OP would be paying.

I wish MY dentist would do that!
