A woman friend of mine came along to go shooting with me at my ranch. She loved shooting the various guns I had. She is also now wanting her own rifle. I told her she should start easy and work her way up. She loved my .22 magnum rifle and shot about 73 rounds out of it. She said she would buy it as a x-mas gift to herself and something under 200 bucks would be preferred. Pics of woman http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y11/htownkro/381013_10151030580335319_535680318_22313304_497671715_n.jpg I'm glad you are aware of the rules. You're going to have a hard time finding something under 200 in 22 mag. Marlin has a bolt action (XT22M is the model number, I think) that can usually be had for around 250. |
|
Savage 93 G or 93 GL. MSRP is around $279 for either, but you should be able to find them cheaper.
|
|
"Best" and "under $200" don't really belong in the same sentence when talking about rifles, with the possible exception of a 10/22 which, by the way, is the correct answer to your question.
22 Mag ammo is ridiculously expensive while 22LR is still available for about $0.03/round. Go 22LR and you'll both be happier. |

I'll be glad to help her out a little, she use to be very liberal considering shes a dance major. However, a weekend of shooting changed that and she opened her eyes once she realized how important politics were. |

Marlin Model 982. Scary accurate and mags are available at walmart and everywhere else.

Savage is the correct answer.
Check out the 17hmr also. I love them! |

Guess I should of said the best .22 under $200.00. She is a poor college student, haha. If she gets the gun, I'll buy her 200 rds of .22 as a present.

I would stay away from the .22 magnum for this.
Either go to .22LR for the low cost, or else step up to 5.56 for the performance. The .22 mag is specific for small game applications. Right now here in SoCal, Turners is selling the Marlin 795 .22LR for $110 when the Marlin rebate is factored in. Off the shelf that is a better rifle then a 10/22, and cheaper. |

The nice thing about 10/22s is the aftermarket bling you can get for it. I'd go for a Marlin 795 or 60. Better trigger and lower cost. |

They come in a bazillion flavors, and there's 87 million ways to personalize it. It wouldn't be my first choice for HD, but a 25 round mag of Mini-Mags to the face or chest of a violent attacker is better than harsh language. Hard to tell how tall she is from the pic, but a compact model might fit her better than a regular model. For hunting, let her borrow one of your guns. .22 Mag ammo will make her wallet cry. |
|
My advice to you is to marry her and buy her all the guns and ammo she wants.

Rossi has the little single shot 22 mag for a little over $100. If she doesnt mind the one shot and hammer thats about all you're gonna find for under $200 new. I'd go the used at a gun show route. Ever since the 17HMR came out, you can find the magnums pretty cheap there.
Score some points by buyin her a cheap beater and refinishing it. Get a little brass plaque engraved with her name on it and super glue it to the stock and she'll be putty in your hands! Oh! BTW, your friend is hot! |
|
Please do not get her the marlin mod 60 that was suggested a few post up. The 10/22 is far better and worth the extra money.

Quoted: Thoughts on this one? http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/36_62_975/products_id/24155 I have the left handed version. It's a tack driver. I'll suggest though that unless she plans to shoot varmints with it, getting a rifle in .22 LR makes more sense. It's a lot cheaper to shoot. The Savage MarK II is a good choice (I have one of those as well).

Either .22lr or .223 AR. No sense in messing with the in-betweens.

Dont get me wrong rugers are awesome but the savage rim fires are awesome. Many times Cabelas alot of different savages on sale just about every other sale |

IMO, a .22 Magnum is a niche cartridge. It's an expensive extended range .22rf, and gets one into 'rimfire only' hunting seasons. I wouldn't bother with it as a target/plinking rifle. Go centerfire. It's not like a 5.56*45 has any recoil.
|

You can buy CCI Mini Mags or other "hot" 22LR for hunting.
I'd avoid 22 Magnum unless you absolutely cannot. |

Remember she is new and still is a little uneasy shooting but she wants to learn. |

I don't know about TX licensing requirements, but lots of states only require a hunter safety course for hunters under 18. If you're over 18 when you start hunting, you just buy a license and go. |

The Marlin costs less and is a better rifle out of the box, particularly the trigger. If you throw in enough money in aftermarket stuff the 10/22 might become the better rifle. The 10/22 has the worst trigger of any rimfire rifle I've shot. |

Any <$200 .22 mag will likely be an abused farm gun. Personally, I'd work on lessening the intimidation (probably noise based) and go with 5.56. |

Rem 597 22mag. I have the heavy barrel w/ laminate stock with a Weaver V24 scope. It will out shoot any of the 22mags listed in this thread.
It ain't going to come in under 200 clams though. Check and see if they offer a synthetic stock, regular barrel in the 597 it might be at the price you need. I have shot 3/8" groups at 100yds with mine, with the 34gr Remington Vmax bullets. It is way more accurate than the 22LR version of the same rifle. |
|
Savage makes a couple of bolt-actions that MSRP between $250 and $300..they probably have some retailer-specific rifle/scope packages as well..it's a LITTLE more than what she specified, but probably the best you're going to find in the range you're looking for.

Marlin bolt .22 mag with a detachable mag, not the tube mag. Extra mags are dirt cheap, a buddy of mine growing up had one it was a damn tack driver. I have always wanted to get one used at a pawn shop to play around with. I read a magazine article years ago about a guy that converted one to a lightweight take down pack rifle.
