2012 Chevy Caprice PPV
or... 2012 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor It seems the Crown Vic has been around as the primary police car forever (minus the early to mid 1990s when the Chevy Caprice also saw heavy use). But now that the Crown Vic production is stopping, which police package will end up being the new king? I'd have to think the Chevy Caprice with its V8 option will be more desirable to more people. But I suppose cost will also play a major role too. Regardless, both new offerings are a drastic departure from what we've been used to seeing in police service. It will take a while to get acclimated to the new cars. |
|
We're getting caprices in the coming years.
I can't wait. I liked the Vic.. but it didn't have any 'go' when I needed it. |
|
Don't care as long as the PPV is available at auction in a few years.

We used to fight for the old Caprices. That got me a ticket once. I was driving my '96 Impala SS, and tried to talk my way out of the ticket. The trooper's response: "Don't bullshit me son, I know exactly what these cars can do. I wish I still had mine." Whoops. |
|
A lot of the local agencies here are running Chargers, some with Hemi's.
|
|
Politics aside it looks like that Caprice totally outclasses the Taurus.
|
|
I forsee temp problems with the turbos in my AO, but I doubt that's even a consideration among the egghead administrators. They'll buy whatever's cheaper and make sure the contract includes a 3 year guaranteed maintenance clause, ignoring any potential downtime penalties it will create.

I suspect we are going to get the Ford for our newest vehicle.
Edit: With turbo? Surely, you jest. |

A while back the car club I'm in had a big cruise/toys-for-tots event and the cops used their new chargers to escort us out of city limits. They would block off intersections for us, then as the last guy in our line would pass the chargers would fuckin' floor it to the next intersection. We had chargers flying by on both sides of our line, lit up and haulin' ass, was pretty sweet. |

The Taurus is Fail Wheel Drive so looks like the Chebby wins in my eyes.

All the complaints I hear are that they have NO trunk room, With the Radio,Camera, and the Spare tire there was no room for a Rifle,Riot gear or much else. Plus the rear seat room with the cage installed left no leg room for prisoners. |

As far as I'm concerned, running traffic in any fullsize SUV sucks big time. Slow, poor handling, and gas hogs.

Easy to say that but they're handcuffed so you need to stuff them in there. |

But I think that was due more to the drivers than the cars. |

My wife has the Pontiac G8 GT with a 6.0L(Holden Commodore) from which the Caprice is derived from. The car has balls....for a 4 door family car. |

Buddy walks out of a country store with a case of beer just as the sheriff pulls in on his way home in a Charger. While he's inside, buddy ices up the beer in a cooler in the bed of my truck. It's hotter than Hell outside. Cop comes out and sees us getting ready to roll and says "Hey, I'll run you for one of those beers." Buddy looks at him and asks ,"What do we get if we win?" Cop says, "No way that'll happen." Buddy looks over at me and I just grin, look at the cop and ask if it's gonna be a drag race or are we goin to town? (road race) Cop is now starting to wonder if we're serious. We're dead serious. He comes over and we start bullshittin and the hood goes up on the truck. Cop forgets all about racin. |

Charger for the win in the car class, my brother drives one for his agency and he says it is well rounded and will flat haul ass.
What will be interesting is to see how many of the agencies in the US will purchase or lease one of the new AWD Chargers. AWD + Charger power will be much safer and provide much more control. |
