love the cabin thread. i am going to build my own next summer. something around 30'x30' wit front and rear porches. mainly for a hunting / get away location. it will take a while to get real utilities installed, due to it having to be run a full mile. but this thread has me wanting to say the hell with it, and install the wood stove, and a temp plumbing system and go for it and move into the thing. ... do the same things you have done, haul water temp till i can get a well, and a solar / generator set up. i have my own nat gas well, so thats a big plus. possibly just drill the well and live totally off grid.
there is a very good chance i will do just that. land will be paid off in 3-4 years, and i will be living rent free after that. i can save $650 a month in rent by moving into my cabin. your giving me inspiration with this thread. |

I'll finish the berm along the road next summer. http://www.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=58966 Next, here is the outside of the cabin on the door side. I finished the roof, and got the shingles done. A few small improvements here and there. http://www.ar15.com/media/viewFile.html?i=58971 And the other side. The crawl space has been closed in. The water line is run to the well and filled in. I also built a new shed for the generator / small shop and buried all the control cables and power cables. http://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/5537/58970.JPG A closeup of the shed. Needs some fine tuning like trim and painting and such. Behind it you can see the trees I cleared from the earlier photo spot. I did not have time to do anything with them, so I just tossed them over the edge with the excavator. http://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/5537/58968.JPG Roof... No longer just Bithuthene. Shingled and remounted the two panels, plus added another on a rack that is hinged at the top so I can angle them more in the summer. http://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/5537/58973.JPG Inside improvements.... Water!!!!! Here is the pressure tank and water softner in the battery / Utility room. http://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/5537/58975.JPG Next is a box for the microwave and a small oven. I am so happy about getting the oven installed and propane plumbed in. Nice to be able to cook shit. http://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/5537/58967.JPG This is an interesting buy from Amazon. To save my small number of outlets, I got this 110 / USB charger. Fits in a normal wall location, but you can plug two things in as well as 2 USB devices. Very handy. http://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/5537/58972.JPG Next is the area under the ships ladder. Currently an old microwave stand, and a small coffee table here. Next project is to build into the wall under the window a place a person can sit or lay down and read. It will have two rows of storage cubes unter it, and a padded top that reclines on one end. It will go from the oven to the computer desk. http://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/5537/58976.JPG I got rid of the larger sofa, and got a recliner/ love seat. Gives me more room and work s just as well. I also relocated the Toyo stove from angled to flush against the wall. http://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/5537/58974.JPG And another photo of the loft. http://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/5537/58969.JPG Sorry update took so long! Thanks and your place looks great! I really enjoy this thread. Vicarious living at it's best! View Quote A couple of things right off the top of my head.... Lessons learned. You ALWAYS forget something. Home Depot and Lowes are both 30 miles from here. I cannot tell you how many times I tried saving a couple bucks on materials, and ended up spending 10x that on gas getting back into town once, sometimes twice more a day to finish a certain project. Buy more than you think you need, and return the rest. When doing my water hook up I was in town several times that day, right up to the point of not being able to get it done because I was afraid the store was goig to close before I got back to it. Next, I did not plan the position of my little cabin in relation to where I am building the house. I can get it done, but it will be tight, and now its impossible to move the small cabin over 10' I'd like due to septic line/ well line etc. BIG planning is important. I had little planning nailed. Buy tools. You may see only one use for a certain tool, but by the time the job is done, you would have been better of getting it early, cause you are gonna need stuff more than you think. A couple of examples... A PVC cutter. I tried getting away with cutting my PEX tubing with a razor knife. That caused a lot of leaks on the fittings due to cuts not being square. that $10 tool made life a lot easier. Another item is batteried for my cordless tools. when you are Jobbing, you use up a lot more batteries than you plan. I'll think about it more and get back to you Aviator |
