I share your sentiments. OP, how much did that land set you back if you dont mind me asking. My family is thinking about buying 100 acres in south MS and will have to pay about 150k. I bet your land cost 5x as much. Oh but it is about 100x cooler than any land in MS.

Beautiful. And you've already started on your log crib tank traps and anti-marauding hordes obstacles.

What kind of construction will you do - slab, basement, log cabin, SIP?

Slab with in floor heat. Debating on either stick build two story with garage and workshop on lower floor, or a cabin and garage separate. Either way will be outdoor wood/coal boiler with a toyo stove oil backup.

Aviator

Sounds nice. I like the separate garage/house, but having that second floor living area means it will be warmer up top in the winter, better views, and you could withstand a flood better (if that's a concern).

I thought they used SIPs a lot in AK? I know you have to have them custom designed sometimes, but I like the resiliency and energy efficiency. Plus if you get whole walls trucked in, on-site completion is faster.

Sort of depends what part of Alaska and what you do.  Engineers, of various types, are usually in demand, state wide.  Think our unemployment has been hanging around 6%, or so.

I have a degree in recreation therapy..I doubt lots of senior citizens live in Alaska.  Probably close to Anchorage since I like being around people.  Or Wasilla since that seems smaller but close enough.

You'd be suprised.  I do hearing aids and many of my patients are in thier 80s and up; think my oldest is 103.  I'm a bit farther north than you may want to tolerate since we hit 60-70 below zero at around the end of January.  I have been seeing more senior packing up and leaving the last couple years, though.  That's more because of fuel and energy costs around here than anything else.

WE hit 60-70 above zero in January. I've got a while to go before I become a senior and 60-70 above is about as cold as I want to go in the winter.

Wow! Its hard to believe remote undeveloped land costs that much in AK.  I just sold a cabin and 12 acres here for 24k.  Gas prices started making the 2 hour trip getting to it cost too much for me to enjoy it.

Not all of it does, but this is in a place what will probably fill up very soon, and be pretty close to Anchorage. As I stated before, Anchorage has no place to grow to. It is surrounded by water, mountains, and military bases. The only way it can grow is if they build this bridge, and the bridge will be right out near where this land is. That plus the view (being able to see Denali) makes it more valuable.

Aviator, Good luck with the building.  If you need anything from Fairbanks, just let us know.  I've been trying to get the wife to move down that way for a while now, but dont want to be too close to Anchorage.  Eagle river/Wasilla at the closest.

20k really wasn't a bad price though.  In a few years, (after the remodel on the house) you might have a new neighbor...ish.

Location, location, location; and what can you see on a clear day.  Mount McKinley or Denali is at least EIGHTY miles (as the crow flys) from his place AND he can see it on a clear day and it's HUGE!  http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt56/RyanMR05/MtMcKinley2.jpg

HA!

When we visited last year for our backpacking trip in Wrangell-St Elias the place we stayed a few nights used this outfit for their little hostel cabins. Think they were the 12x24s with 6 inch logs. ($7,525 ea) He had about 12 setup with bunk beds and was heated with little propane heat and lamps.

He'd still need a hunting license and harvest tickets for big game.  Should he just want to shoot a grouse or whatnot, just a hunting license.  $25.  Harvest tickets are free.

Since he is out of town, I'd assume he could, so long as it is bowhunting, or in a safe direction for firearms and following regulations for hunting in his unit.
