I recall reading a story in one of these threads about a door down in an abandoned mine in Utah.  Definitely freak-you-out material.  I have no idea how to find it, though.

Anybody remember that one?

I heard this recent nugget last night from another Trooper, it's classic so bear with me.  A female is driving down a stretch of AL Hwy 9  at night, and sees a man walking, she passes him by but decides to swing around and pick him up.  He is seated in the rear passenger seat, a conversation commenced.  As most conversations do this time of year, the driver asked the passenger what he thought about the upcoming (presidential?) elections.  The driver stated "There's not going to be any more elections", and as the story usually goes, he vanished.  At this point the woman stops the car and promptly exits and stands at the car, according to the story teller a Trooper checked her a few moments later.  On Palm Sunday in 1994 the Goshen community, which is a little north of here, was hit by an F4 catagory tornado, it was a horrible day I remember it vividly, months later I overheard stories of a lone man walking near that stretch of Hwy 9, if  I remember correctly he was picked up by someone, and he made a statement about an upcoming event, the tornado struck that morning.

Vaguely.

It's probably in the Swindle thread, but you would have wade through the whole thing to find it.

That's one of the creepiest stories I had ever read, and it was seared into my memory.  Hence, it was easy to find.

My Grandfather died when I was very young. I'm told I forced my parents to save a spot for him at the dinner table for over a year. Not really creepy and I was too young to remember my rationale...But still strange. I just remember having the feeling that we had to save him a spot.

In 2005 early 2006 in Jalabad Afghanistan.

We were having a boring day, nothing had been going on for about a week. Everything was quiet and going good. Had just come back from a vehicle patrol and was counting everything getting ready to put the boys in the rack. All of a sudden, all the radios come to life. Someone on the other end is screaming about being ambushed and getting whacked to pieces.

Everyone in earshot gets that " Oh shit" look on their faces, and I yell at my APL to get the trucks reloaded and have everyone suited up and ready to roll in 5 minutes while I run to the COC and find out where we are needed. As I enter the COC, it is hopping. Radios going off, guy still screaming, guns going off.

The RO is trying to break in and find out who is in contact. Jump on BN freq and ask them who is in contact and if we need to roll to them. BN says everyone reports negative contact and to stand by. BN gets in contact with higher, who is also recieving the transmission, and they report all units are reporting negative contact.

Radios going crazy, you can hear all kinds of screaming; people in pain, people screaming to break contact... and suddenly we hear " Get that GD 60 rolling! " We all look at each other and ask 60? as in the machinegun? Voice comes back screaming about    " Get the pig going! Get it going! "  Then, he starts screaming in pain, and the transmission cuts out.

No one had contact that day. No one. That was the freaking thing that ever happened to me. Had a nightmare about it that night.

Please excuse the stupid question since I'm not military.  I assume the shock came because the M60 was not in use at all in Afghanistan at that time?

Another 2005 story from Afghanistan.

My buddy was on a vehicle patrol. Had the Chaplain with him, in a seperate vic. They do a security halt; all the trucks cloverleaf and dudes do their 5s & 25s and dismount to provide security. The Chaplains vehicle has him, the driver, and the gunner.

The gunner gets down to go and take a whiz. The Chaplain tells the driver " Hey, escort me around so I can talk to the guys." Driver rogers up and gets out with the Chaps and yells to the gunner what they are going to do. He yells back and continues with his business,

Driver and Chaps get about 50 yards from the vehicle when the pressure plate IED his ( the Chaplains) tire is sitting on decides to go off.

If there was any doubt in that mans faith, it was cleared up that day. And that is the day I became religious.

Atmospheric skip and propagation is pretty commont with radio signals. You can hear another HAM radio operator on the other side of the world if conditions are right.

Phantom transmissions being bounced from Vietnam wouldn't surprise me. And thanks for creeping me out.

Dude. We had a similar experience in Kunar. Only the guys were screaming in Russian. It was coming over the Single Channel Plain Text radio we kept in the TOC on our little 2 squad OP in case we needed to talk to the ANA at the bottom of the mountain. Lots of yelling and shooting. I was really pissed because I thought someone was screwing around and it was extremely unprofessional. We were still talking about a couple weeks later when a guy came to fix our SNAP. Air Force cat who was real smart with radios. He told us that in theory, radio waves could be bouncing all over those mountains and come back 20+ years later and you'd receive them. Nobody else was aroud to pull an elaborate joke like that, especially with the shooting in the background. It was definitely weird.

"20 years later" is a bit of a stretch. "Bouncing around the mountains" is pure BS.  However, there ARE some very strange stories about radio wave propagation. One of the wierdest is about long-period "echos" in which radio operators hear their own signals coming back to them fifteen to thirty seconds after they've transmitted. Now, EME (Earth-Moon-Earth) transmissions take 1 1/2 seconds round trip, and are pretty much limited to VHF and UHF radio frequencies. So for a HF (High Frequency) radio signal to take 30 seconds to return means that it has taken TWENTY TIMES the distance from the earth to the moon (total distance travelled).

A ham radio friend who was a plasma physics Ph. D. said that the current theory involved a magnetic field around the earth, which extended many many miles into space, and essentially "ducted" the radio signal for the entire distance.

I am suggesting that such an instance can explain how the signal got into your friend's radios. The US didn't use the M60 back then, but there was (and likely, are) many other countries that do so. Might also have been some commando unit or some merc unit that got into trouble.

Since you were also just "putting the unit into the rack," it suggests that the situation happened at dusk or very nearly dusk. There's another radio phenomenon called "Grey-line propagation," in which a radio signal originating at a given latitude will travel along the terminator (the separation between day and night) and be heard at exactly the same latitude but on the other side of the equator.

Or it may be ghosts. Who knows.

eta The opposite side of the equator from Afghanistan is smack in the middle of the Indian Ocean, so that theory is a wash.

So my son's 2. Speaks both German and English thanks to the German mom. All three of us were sitting on our bed the other morning (since he likes to wake us up WAY before we want to most days). He looks out into the hallway from our bed, smiles and says "Omi!" (omi is German for grandmother...). We both looked at each other...looked at him...and said "What?" He pointed...and again said "omi"  "Where's omi jake?" "right there..."

Next day, mom and Jake are shopping. Still in the parking lot of the store, wife is on her cell talking to her daughter when from the backseat she hears "Baby!" (anytime he sees a baby he gets all excited for some reason). Wife asked him to repeat it and again asked where...he pointed out into the empty parking lot.

So either the kid's delusional (I blame her side if so...) or....yeah.

I've had my own experiences, especially at my parent's current house down in GA. Whispers, strange noises. And my parents in their house have had things fall off the walls, while not effecting the hanger they were on. Area they live in was pretty heavy with the battles of Sherman's march into Atlanta down the 75 corridor, so lingerers in the area wouldn't be shocking. The last time I was there was when something whispered to me. Made me lean forward in the "you're too close to me, man!" kind of way and there was a distinct "hello"

But anyway...my minor contribution. Aside from footsteps walking across our hotel in Savannah, not too many creepy stories on this end.

Its when you park your vehicles in said pattern to provide 360 degree security.

5's and 25's are you method for checking the immediate area of your vehicles (and yourself) for IEDs. You scan in a 5 meter circumference then in a 25 meter. We also added 100 meter scans on to our TTPs.

That''s only about 2000 miles or so from the Russian border, and far less than that from many possible Russian operating areas. Radio waves could have been reflected into your area quite easily.

It's still pretty creepy though... thinking of some guys  you don't even know getting whacked that way.

Not creepy at all... considering that I have fed  the birds regularly.... 'birds' being red tailed hawks, and their "feed" was live white mice... "Red tailed hawks gotta eat, same as buzzards and worms."

Feed the spider and you'll make a friend. He'll come and sleep with you at night... or, if it's a 'she,' she'll come and sleep with you with all her chilluns. Now, THAT is creepy!

Are you saying the transmission could have been concurrent with the time the American soldiers heard it?  That couldn't possibly be, unless Russian forces were engaged with other forces (Chechens?) that day.

Great thread.  Keep the stories coming.

I can't think of anything really creepy that happened to me ever.  I heard stories from friends, but I have no way of knowing if they are bullshit or not.

One story involves some old grain elevators in Buffalo.  My friend claimed that he knew a guy that claimed he knew about ritual satanic murders that took place there.  The story he told, that he heard, from someone else who heard it from who knows where, was interesting, however was hard to verify.  It's been so many years that I don't remember much of it.

Another creepy story involves a haunted road in Clarence NY..................

This story I will write about later, closer to Halloween.

Fascinating.

That's what I love about ARFCOM.  A creepy thread can suddenly turn into a fascinating discussion of wave propagation theory.

Great info, thanks.

ETA: Wasn't there some sci-fi/horror film a few years back about someone who was receiving radio signals from 20 years ago?

ETA: Wasn't there some sci-fi/horror film a few years back about someone who was receiving radio signals from 20 years ago?

You're probably thinking of Frequency.

Back in the day. When I was an LEO, I would drive to the top of a hill in town once or twice a shift. It was about the middle of the year in 85 when we got new vehicles and new equipment for them which meant new radios.

After that when I went up the hill I could catch radio traffic from Dept's on the other side of the state. Over 200 miles away. On certain nights the reception was as clear as if I was there with them.

I heard a lot of chases and such. But thankfully no Ghost Transmissions.

Back in the '70s I had a CB radio- like millions of others. Since it was an AM radio it behaved differently than a line of sight FM radio. I have "shot skip" and talked to someone in Alaska from here in Fort Worth. The signals bounce under certain conditions. I never heard of a 20 year delay though.

That shit just creeped me right the fuck out.

Damn.

Great story.
There are similar ones from every war since we had radios. That doesn't mean that the writer was lying.

Fascinating.

I would guess you're thinking about R-Point, a Korean ghost/horror movie that started with them receiving radio calls for help from a platoon that had missing for three years.

.

Or, more likely, the movie Frequency.

From IMDB:
A rare atmospheric phenomenon allows a New York City firefighter to communicate with his son 30 years in the future via short-wave radio. The son uses this opportunity to warn the father of his impending death in a warehouse fire, and manages to save his life. However, what he does not realize is that changing history has triggered a new set of tragic events, including the murder of his mother. The two men must now work together, 30 years apart, to find the murderer before he strikes so that they can change history––again.

Ok, I've gotten a lot of entertainment from this thread, so I'll contribute something.
It's kind of a long story, I'll try to be as clear and succinct as possible.

In 1997, I finally managed to develop a relationship with my highschool crush. We had both graduated that year and were working crappy jobs, but enjoying life...or so I thought.
She lived in her childhood home with her brother who had purchased the house from their parents. We stayed up late, drank shitty beer her brother bought us, and did the stuff 18 year old kids do. One night she told me a story from her childhood that really chilled me. I've never been one to believe in the supernatural, but because she was so serious and visibly disturbed when recounting her experience, I couldn't help but believe she really saw something. I forget the specific details of the story, but it featured a dark, hooded figure standing in her door frame one night. She described how an overwhelming feeling of dread and doom instantly washed over her. The figure raised an arm as if accusing her of something, then disappeared. She was absolutely terrified. Too scared to move, scream or anything else. At first, I thought she was joking with me, but The look on her face told another story. She saw something that night. She had relayed the ordeal to her other family members the next day, but it was dismissed it as a typical childhood nightmare. Her story was pretty chilling, especially because this event happened in the very room in which we were currently sleeping. He story was soon shuffled to the back of the line in my brain, leaving me with happier thoughts.

Three months into our relationship, this poor young girl hung herself in the closet. The night of her death, I had to go home for some reason and promised to pick her up for breakfast. When I arrived at her house the following morning, I was greeted by two detectives, her brother, and her father. I was absolutely devastated  I won't go into further detail, but that was a very difficult year for me. If it weren't for a very dear friend, my life could have taken a very different course.

A few years later I ended up moving in to the house as a tenant. The brother and I were friends and rent was dirt cheap. It was a little weird being in the house again, but I got over it. (I didn't take her room, for obvious reasons.) There were other tenants as well. One of the renters was a girl I had not previously known. The brother had met her  recently and upon hearing of he housing woes, offered her his sister's old room. He did not tell her that the room was where his sister had died. The tenant knew that his sister had committed suicide, but not where or when. I should also mention that the female tenant had never met the deceased girl, they did not know each other.

Here's the punchline...sorry.

One night, we are all sitting in the living room drinking rum and Coke. The roommate mentioned a terrible nightmare she had endured the previous evening.
This girl went on to describe the same exact hooded figure standing in the doorway, accusatory pose and all. Her "nightmare" was almost verbatim what my then, girlfriend had experienced and relayed to me two years prior. I don't know how to describe the feeling that went through my body. To say I was chilled would be the understatement of the century. The brother and I were speechless. We didn't bother to tell her the story, but she could tell something was amiss. Soon after that, I moved out.
