Verizon Claims At Least 12 Acts Of Network Sabotage Committed As Unions Strike
About 45,000 CWA, IBEW Workers Walked Off Job in Mid-Atlantic, Northeast Region

By Todd Spangler –– Multichannel News, 8/8/2011 4:54:19 PM

Verizon Communications said Monday it had repaired at least 12 acts of sabotage to its communications facilities in four states as a strike by 45,000 of the telco's union employees appeared headed into a third day.

The company implied that union workers –– represented by the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers –– were responsible for the vandalism, although the telco did not say so explicitly. Verizon said the deliberate damage to its networks began Saturday (Aug. 6) and continued after the strike began on Sunday (Aug. 7).

"These acts of sabotage are reprehensible," Verizon chief security officer Mike Mason said in a statement. "In addition to inconveniencing our customers, these deliberate disruptions of our network have affected hospitals, paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement and other first responders."

Phones in part of Lewis, Oneida, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties went down Tuesday because of a likely case of sabotage, a Verizon official said.

A fiber line in a box near Doyle and Trenton roads in the town of Marcy intersection between Utica and South Trenton was cut, said John J. Bonomo, director of media relations. The boxes are generally secure and require a key for access. State police are investigating the line cut.

MARCY —

Reported criminal damage to Verizon fiber optic lines in Marcy caused widespread loss of landline phone service Tuesday and the loss of cell-phone service in northern Oneida County, state police said.

Areas north of Remsen in Oneida County and into Herkimer County were still unable to even make 911 calls as of Tuesday evening, Oneida County Emergency Services Director Kevin Revere said. Revere was hoping that no emergencies were taking place that couldn’t be called in, he said.

Verizon: Sabotage 'Reprehensible,' Striking Workers Could Be Fired

Verizon Communications on Monday revealed that its fiber-optic lines have been deliberately cut in parts of Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Maryland as part of several acts of “sabotage" that have occurred since Saturday – just before 45,000 workers went on strike this week after two unions representing the employees failed to reach an agreement with the telecommunications giant on a new contract.

Verizon also reported an outage due to stolen electrical equipment in Cedar Grove, N.J., and an incident that resulted from tampering with a heating system at a central office in Manhattan.

“These acts of sabotage are reprehensible. In addition to inconveniencing our customers, these deliberate disruptions of our network have affected hospitals, paramedics, fire fighters, law enforcement and other first responders," Verizon Chief Security Officer Mike Mason said in a statement. “Verizon is working closely with local authorities to investigate these sabotage incidents, and identify and prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law. And we will not hesitate to terminate any employee who may be involved in these acts."

Verizon also claims that union picketers are illegally preventing it from accessing tools to serve customers. Verizon said it has obtained a statewide injunction in Pennsylvania against such activities and is pursuing similar action elsewhere.

My sister is a manager at Verizon.  She has to cross the picket lines every day and is amazed that the people that she worked closely with every day have turned into a bunch of savages.  They're yelling obscenities and making threatening gestures toward her when she crosses the picket line.  Meanwhile, she's having to work 76 hour work weeks (for the same pay) until this strike is over.

I hope that Verizon can break the union, and hire people that want to do and honest days work for a days pay.

Back in the '89 strike up in New England, there were cut fiber incidents.  The fiber that ran up a utility pole was purposely cut at the base of the pole.  Splicing/repairing the fiber was incredibly hard. The act were done by people who knew where to cut/damage.

I don't have Verizon anymore.  When it was named General Telephone, I had one in two calls operator assisted.  There was a period a few years ago when I had over 15 complaints (verified) to the PUC about bought service that Verizon finally admitted had not been installed (and was insisting that it had).  Each worker who came out criticised the last repairs.

It should be time to start over in that company.  This includes the top management.

When I was going to college I used to pass by a medium-sized manufacturing facility every day.  Normally the place looked like it was in good condition, well maintained, with nice landscaping outside.  But there were a few strikes that occurred.  During the strikes things changed - broken windows, bleach poured on the grass to kill it, fences damaged, profane statements spraypainted on the sidewalks out front, picketers screaming, chanting, swearing... well done

Strike cuts off local customers

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

There was a time when the telephone repair man was a welcome visitor who could be counted on to fix things promptly and get communications humming again with a minimum of fuss.

Don't tell that to Joanne Robidoux, president of Goldmark Federal Credit Union in Attleboro.

Yes, Robidoux can still talk on her phone. But, she says her office has been trying unsuccessfully since Friday to get Verizon to fix the Internet service on which it relies to handle direct deposits, update balances and perform other vital tasks.

Some customers report outages, waits for service

Among the outages that Verizon said were the result of sabotage were cut wires on Norfolk Avenue in the Easton Industrial Park, near where strikers had set up a picket line

http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2011/08/10/some_customers_feeling_pinch_in_verizon_strike/

• Ten incidents of fiber-optic lines being deliberately cut in the Bronx, Pomona, Farmingdale and Gilderland in New York; two separate incidents in Tewksbury in Massachusetts; incidents in Bel Air in Maryland, and East Dover, Oakland and Plainfield in New Jersey.

• An outage due to stolen electronic equipment in Cedar Grove, N.J., affecting a local police department, among other customers.

Looks like a nationwide union coordinated sabotage plan, hopefully the Feds will de-certify the union.

If a local Tea Party group even considered trying some disruption stuff like this, the FBI/ATF/IRS plants and agents provocateurs among them would wail to their handlers in chorus and there would be doors kicked and dogs shot and pregnant women slammed against walls all over town.

The fact that it's "organized labor" doing it...well, that's a different story.

As someone who has been involved in telecom since the early 80's, this is common practice when one of the telecom unions goes on strick. Even as far back as the days of New England/New York Tel, NyNex, it occurred. We locked all phone closets and access areas and notified building security to not allow any telco employees into the building without my permission. Even then they had to wait for one of my staff to show up as a full time escort....yes, we had attempts by striking workers trying to access building to damage the telco equipment. We'd have security hold them for police and kept a list of names so  when they went back to work, they would never be allowed into the buildings.

Huge cables were cut, and sections removed to make it more difficult to repair, which never occurred when the unions were not on strike, but it wasn't done by the unions.....RIIIIGHT! The funny part is, that except for the incidents of sabotage, outages and failures occurred less frequently than when the union was working. There were significantly fewer errors or work involved outages. Also, we had fewer incidents of workers extending outages so that they could get a few hours of OT. So, other than securing the building, our work load decreased during the strikes.

Union sabotage is nothing new.

The car companies had this problem with almost every strike.  Damage to the factories was common.

When the brotherhoods struck the Florida East Coast Railroad, some of their members engaged in sabotage, including planting bombs under the track and shooting into the cabs of moving locomotives.

But unions are all about safety, or at least that's what they say.

The people who will repair it were/are likely managers who have been trained so they have access to those tools.  Repair on a fiber definitely requires skill.  In some cases, managers were technicians who were promoted in the past and had some hands-on ability.  Still, it's time consuming and the general public is pissed at someone.

As a retired Construction Manager with AT&T, all I can say is don't be surprised if some of this was caused by A) copy cats from the public, and B) mistakes caused by incompetent managers who really shouldn't be allowed to leave the garage. Some of it is sabotage by strikers, but not all. Most of the employees and most of the managers are just like foot soldiers just trying to get through the day. Having said that, it's a Federal offense to cut a cable and anyone who does it should be hanged. Literally. Also, there is a PR campaign going on here. Trouble  comes every day, strike or not. And now you have fewer people who are either inexperienced or have been out of the loop for a while trying to do the work that is done by more people who do know what they're doing. There are no heroes here; Verizon is not a victim.

Yeah right.

Verizon says workers engaged in illegal picketing Monday by blocking nonunion employees from accessing company facilities. Police in Baltimore County, Md., say six striking workers were arrested Monday morning for blocking the driveway of a facility in Randallstown.

Verizon also claims to have found and repaired a dozen acts of sabotage. The company says fiber-optic cables were deliberately cut in 10 locations, including Bel Air, Md.

The general public is going around cutting fiber optic cable on purpose? This was not 'incompetent managers' screwing up repairs but deliberate cuts.

By Tuesday, Verizon was looking for injunctions from courts in Pennsylvania and Delaware, to halt union vandalism and physical confrontations.  The company also put out a $50,000 reward for “information leading to the arrest and prosecution of individuals that intentionally damage Verizon cables or facilities, or cause or attempt to cause physical injury to any Verizon employee or contractor.”
