Bathtub drain is draining really slow. Happens about once a year and I usually just unscrew the push-down stopper and remove the usual big, funky chunks of hair...wife and daughter use that tub so there always hair everywhere.
Anyway, this time that didn't do the trick and the drain is still plugged somewhere further down the line. Any suggestions on what's the strongest liquid drain cleaner out there? Plastic pipes. Thanks. |

i use the pro drano stuff every couple of months - it works decent if i let it soak for 20-30 minutes.

Floweasy, if you can find anyone nearby that will sell it to you. It's mainly marketed to plumbers through supply houses. Of course, a good drain snake works wonders.

Snake / Auger if you don't like pouring chemicals down your drain.
Muriatic acid will work and not harm the plastic pipes, though it can produce some really foul gasses; make sure you have plenty of ventilation. Liquid chlorine will also work and not harm the plastic pipes. You might be able to get away with it's less concentrated cousin: Laundry bleach. |

There used to be one extra strong one, brand name Sulfury, a sulfuric acid drain cleaner, but a net search doesn't bring it up, so I'm thinking it got banned by the govt, too hot to handle.

I am a CPO and used to manage a $50million dollar aquatic facility. That included janitorial duties of staff. I kept this stuff under lock and key, or it'd be used too much. It was recommended by a salesman whose company didn't even sell it. I would only use it during HUGE events, usually the type that were televised, when we had clogs that needed attention. THIS IS THE ANSWER. The product is called ONE-SHOT. Flush with TONS of water. Being a world-class facility, we didn't care about utility bills. Let me caution you: used incorrectly you will cause damage to pipes. I had a staff member do some damage once. The packaging almost reads like the South park opening and tells you to never use it. before you go the chemical route how about trying this:

IF you go to your local walmart in the do it yourself / paint / plumbing general corner there will be more drain cleaners than in the cleaning area. One will be in a black bottle and the bottle will be in a sealed bag. Use this one carefully.

Try a big stock pot of boiling water first.

I did the drain cleaner chemical crap for years at my old house. Eventually it would always lead to calling a plumber.
With the amount of $$$ I dumped down the drain over the years, I could have bought a nice power-snake and done it like a pro. When I moved into a newer house, after a few years I am noticing the same deal - hair/women crap-building up in the bathroom tub/sink. My wife loses more hair than anyone I know. I can't believe she isn't bald. I went and bought one of these - but haven't used it yet. Thrift. I haven't a clue how it works, but it works wonders. For $7 at a plumbing supply store you can't afford not to try it.

I just pulled the sink drain pipes back to the wall this Saturday...my solution to your problem? Get rid of the source!!!
I had to use a high pressure hose into the drain while my son covered the vent on top of the roof...shit was bad.. |

Liquid Plumr gel.
My tub would have 4-5 inches of water in it after taking a shower. So, in went the liquid plumer gel. Follow directions. The only thing I did different was I poured a pot of really hot [almost boiling] water in . Did the trick. Still draining fine 6 months later. |

I HAVE ALSO PUT 1/2 CUP BAKING SODA DOWN THE DRAIN AND ABOUT 1-2 CUPS VINEGAR AND THAT WORKS GOOD TOO. Damn caps lock - I'm not retyping that... |

I just did mine. Pulled out hair.
No drain. Out of boredom I palmed / cuped my hand over the hole ( tub was full of water). And gave a few thrusts. And boy was I supprised when it started draining again !!! |

As a chemist, I think that just about the best thing you can use is good old Draino crystals.
The blue tinted, white beads with aluminum chips. Dissolves in the water in the trap, creating a HOT and extremely caustic solution that churns as it reacts with the aluminum chips. Just what the doctor ordered for most everything you will find in a shower or sink drain. |

tried backing soda& vinegar = nothing went to home depot & bought Zep(commercial) Crystal Heat drain opener = worked damn good about $8.00 I believe. |

Go to lowes/home depot/wal mart and get you one of these CO2 powered motherfuckers. http://www.amazon.com/Kleer-Drain-100-Instant-Opener/dp/B000DZD0VI pop in a cartridge, press it against the drain, and push. no more clog. Thank me later. And if you're thinking that it will blow your pipes up, fear not. If it didn't blow the pipes on the 60 year old shithole house with monkey fuck plumbing that we were renting, I think you'll be ok. We had a tub drain that was slow from day 1 when we moved in. From all the drain cleaners and gimmicks i tried it would have been easier and more effective to throw $100 down the drain (literally) NOTHING worked until I found the above mentioned wonder tool. |

If it's a hair clog, pour 2 gallons (enough to get well past the trap and soak the clog) of regular old bleach into the clog if there is no standing water and then leave it overnight. It sounds ridiculously simple, but you'll thank me in the morning. Also, if you have to escalate to manual force you won't create a toxic waste dump to have to work in.
ETA: Wifey has butt length hair and son has long hair too, we have to do this every couple of months. |
