Very nice OP. My wife has cleared me to do this if I can ever find a crate (preferably still full) that suits my budget. Of course, knowing me, it'll sit in the back of the garage for at least ten years before I get around to it, and then will never pass half finished.

A vendor at a recent gunshow had a crate with 7 Mosins in it. After some back and forth, they agreed to sell me the crate if I bought 4 of the Mosins. I removed the original lid and replaced it with a newly made glass top set in a 2.5" pine frame, while relocating the original hinges. I decided to stain the pine with an olive woodstain, thinking it would wear better than paint. The lower part of the frame is 3/4" thick, and the upper part is 1/2" thick with a 1/4" rabbit to hold the glass top in place. I then used some 1-1/4" brass bolts to hold the upper and lower portions of the frame together. Pictured in the crate are the 4 91/30s that came with the crate. I also have a nice 91/30 Tula and a pair of M44s that could also go in the crate, but they're simply up on the wall right now. http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z362/0471861731/_DSC0698MosinCoffeeTable-A.jpg [the backstory here is that I needed a DIY project to take my mind off of my divorce] ETA: The beer is sitting on the top to help show that there is a glass top on there. Some of my coworkers were unsure of whether the glass was in there or not. WANT! Wonder if the G/F would go for this. Hmm, I bet she would. Just need the crate and a couple more Mosins. |

The date stenciled on the side is 1940. I don't know if this was the original build date of the crate, or simply an indication that they are a group of aresnally refinished 1940 receivers. The crate sat pretty deeply in mud at one point so there are clay deposits at the bottom of the crate near the joints in the boards where the water finally receded out; I left this sediment in place since it's primarily just on the far left side of the dividers and doesn't too bad.
As you can see, the top opens and stays open as easily as the original. And, it's not a bad place to toss the spent 7.62x54r shell casings after a day at the range.
Here's a better look at the corner detail of the glass top. It should be a nice secure joint that will hold together for years to come. I hit the bolt heads with a torch before I installed them to burn off any lacquer; in time, the bolts should develop an appropriate tarnish.
ETA: The crate is just a bit out of square. In hindsight, I wish I had mad the top a 1/4" wider to handle the out-of-square underlap. |

Awesome! And your basement looks great too. (The additional photos you posted provided a view of how orderly and neat your basement supplies are kept.)
I'm not even going to give you a hard time about the vegetarianism. I know other guys in NoVA who are veggie for their health reasons. |

I suppose I could count my neighbors' cows and goats, but they are rather poor conversationalists, and they wouldn't understand my coffee table.
