I'm wanting to replace my 42" Panasonic plasma, and wandered into the local ABC Warehouse.    Wasn't even thinking about buying anything, but the sales guy said "hey, I got exactly what you're looking for".   Of course, I kinda rolled my eyes a bit and said, "Ok, give me your best shot".

So, the guy shows me this display model and said for 950 bucks, I could have it, with a free  HDMI cable (I know, no biggy), and free delivery to my house.

Seems like a good deal, but being typical me, I back peddled out of there.   Set was manufactured June of 2009.

How can I tell how many hours the set has been on?

Thanks.

I'd say if it is working fine now, no reason why it is going to stop after it gets to your house.

If the price on it is really great compared to retail, check 'net for pricing, and they offer you free delivery.

Go for it.

If it's going in a low light room go for it. I have two DLP Mitsubishis, my 73" is freaking awesome. I paid $3,500 for it.

Worst case you'll have to replace the bulb soon and, that's around $125.00

This is the only picture I have of mine. Can't tell much but it's a WD-73732

Dell is offering the C series 73" for 1099 (plus 6 percent MI sales tax) and free shipping.   I think the 837 is a little "better" model, though.

Wish the guy would have quoted me 1400 bucks and I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

The only thing you need to think about is the bulb.  Since it's a floor model it has probably been turned on most of the time they are open.

Bulbs last 2-3000 hours.  They only cost about $200 max and are very easy to replace.

There is no burn in issues with DLP.

I have a 4.5yr old Samsung 1080P DLP that was our main tv for 4 years before being moved to the bedroom and it has to have at least 3000 hours of time running and the bulb is still going strong.

FYI, Best Buy's price online for a WD73838 which is a Diamond model is $2399.

Sounds like a pretty good deal but like the poster above said you need to make sure you have decent light control.  The DLP TV's typically have glossy screens like a plasma so a brightly lit room can be an issue due to reflections.

C series < 7 series < 8 series

I have a 60737.  I think that the Mitsubishi DLP's are the best deal in Big screens.

I know 5 guys who have them, and we all love them.  (None a 73, though, the price on those has come down a lot.  The incremental cost, 2 years ago when I got mine, was ~300 for a 65, and double for a 73 vs. the 60 I bought.  The array that I know is 2x 60737, a 65837, a 65835, and my BIL's old 62)

Even if it's been on a bit, the bulbs online aren't expensive.  I've never had an issue myself, but I'm going to buy one eventually.  My Dad blew one on his 65 the day before Thanksgiving... the one guy in town with one in stock will get'cha for 3-4x what they'll get you for online.  My Brother-in-law, who has had his 62 for years now (he had the first I knew) has been through one bulb, but his didn't blow the day before he 'needed' it for something, so he was out of commission for 2-3 days before he could swap in a new one.  I believe it's about a 5-10 minute issue to change one, it's just having it.

Our first DLP Samsung bulb went 17000 hours before it needed to be changed.

In regards to the bulbs for the DLP,  I just replaced mine in a Samsung 46" DLP.
Really easy and simple. A few screws to remove a cover on the back, one screw to remove the bulb housing, and then pull the bulb housing out.  Slide new housing and bulb in.  Screw cover back on.

I Bought a replacement bulb online.  You could get just the bulb and put it in the existing housing.  This would require a few more screws in order to replace the bulb.  I decided to get the complete housing and bulb for only $20 more than what just the bulb alone costs.  It cost a total of $138, including 2 day shipping.

The DLPs are fine TVs they just suffer from not being the latest, greatest thing...IMO they are a fantastic bargain.

In a dark room with minimal viewing angle needed, OH YEA.  The next best thing to projectors, and for the cost of a good DLP, way more worth it.

It's a decent deal on a display model, but see if you can work in a free/discounted bulb to keep around.

The bulb in my DLP is going on 5 years.

A set that large, for that price... I'd grab it.

Heck, even if you buy a replacement bulb when you buy the TV, it's still a good deal, IMO.

I guess I was just curious how much "run time" was on the tv.........how many hours the tv has been turned on.

I thought there was a 4 digit code you could punch into the machine and it would tell you.

60" DLP Mitsu here.

Love it. DLP is great, and for the price / picture you can't beat it. Yeah I can't hang it on the wall, but its a TV not a Picasso....

Make sure you give it some space from the wall, don't push it up against it. The bulb gets hotter than hell and the fan needs to blow out the hot air. 6" - 12" is good and will keep the hot air flowing away.

DLP? That's why it's cheap. They aren't really going to be making those anymore. But that doesn't mean it won't be awesome for you.

Not a bad tv, although I don't think I'd mess with a DLP/rear projection tv.

Make sure you can tolerate SSE (silk screen effect) & SDE (screen-door effect)

sitting directly in front ... great,,,, go tot the sides and you can see a huge drop in brightness.

there,,  that was the turd in the punch bowl

edit:

a display model from 2009?    does it come with a new bulb and a like new warranty?

you KNOW its been on 12 hours a day in that showroom ..

Not sure what you mean by the part in red. You make it sound like if the bulb burns out, you have to get rid of the set.

Many people simply use the bulb going on their DLP as an excuse to buy a a new TV.

This. You don't have to get a new set when the bulb burns out. It's a $125 part and takes less than 5 minutes to change.

Well, I called the salesman and had him punch in the code to get the hours on the set..........  5100 hours!!!!!!!

I think I'll pass on this one.   I'm not afraid to change the bulb, but 5100 hours is quite a bit, and for a bit more cash, I can get a new one from Dell for $1099 plus tax with free shipping.

Someone would have had to watch TV 8 hours a day for 637 days straight. I bet it was owned by a bar or something like that.

No kidding........I ran the math as well and all I can think is that they never shut the machine down at night when they left for the night.......maybe the machine would go into "sleep" mode and nobody would notice (or care) that it was still on.   Machine is stamped July (or was it June) of 2009 when it was manufactured.

Anyway, just too many "questions" with this particular unit for me to go any further with it.

Projectors require setup, construction, planning and a dark room. I like just being able to jump on the couch and turn the TV on to a bright crystal clear picture.

I have a 65" DLP in my living room as well as a 60" plasma in my bedroom. The plasma is a better picture but I play a lot of call of Duty and I tried it on the Plasma and didnt like near as much as on the DLP for some reason, so I have my Xbox on the big screen and my blu ray on the plasma. Works for me.

I love my Mitsu DLP, but for that price I'd be wary of a display model.

TV's don't last forever, and that ones probably been on for 12 hours a day for a year
