Flat one of my favorite aircraft Mine too! Loved them since I was a kid. In 8th grade I did a presentation on them in front of the class. |

IMHO, the only warbird that looks BADDER than the F4 is the F-15.

6th grade teacher flew those and was stationed in Lybia.
He told us all about the F4 Phantom. |

Got to hitch a ride on one once. Slept like a baby till 20 min before landing. It was a carrier landing somewhere so there is one with my fingerprints embedded in the handles somewhere. Navy pilots have big balls.

My across the street neighbor was a R.I.O. in F-4's for the Oregon Air Guard. He said they would get "Killed" in mock dogfights with P-80's all the time. Granted the pilots of the P-80's were fantastic instructor pilots, that still doesnt paint a great picture of the aircraft. It did hold alot of ordinace though, and it was pretty cool looking with the opposing deheidrel.

The F15 is a beautiful aircraft (it's one of my favorites), but the F4 just screams "I'm gonna fuck you up." *Exception is made for a fully loaded Strike Eagle. ETA: great pics, metalsaber . Thanks for the new desktop! |

Used to work on them back in my Air Wing days. Com/Nav/Electronic Countermeasures. Truely a badass workhorse of a bird. They had been modified and upgraded so much that they became a real pain in the ass to work on some systems. Still, there is a huge elegence about them.
We eventually transitioned to F-18s. I can still remember when our last F-4 took off on it's way to the boneyard. There was a real sadness on the flightline that day. |

Quoted: I remember watching F-4's flying in and out of the base near my grandmothers, day and night. I love the scream they would make when they approached with their speed brakes deployed. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c83/goodnbuzzd/F-4-1.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c83/goodnbuzzd/HeritageFlight.jpg Did you just take these pics? EAA? I just saw an F4 and F15 maybe those same 2 flying at EAA last weekend. F4 was still parked on the tarmac on Monday, maybe I'll go take a look tonight again. |

Too large a format to post here....F4 and a TU-95. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b3/F-4B_VF-151_CV-41_TU-95.jpg |

One of my favorite birds of all time. I love watching Nam combat footage of the F4...
Badassed craft for sure. -V |

Quoted: The F-4 at Oshkosh this year was F-4E-48-MC #71-0237 From Tyndall AFB, pictured above. The F-15 was F-15E-47 #89-0485 from Seymour Johnson AFB. I don't know what other ships made up the flight.Quoted: I remember watching F-4's flying in and out of the base near my grandmothers, day and night. My favorite airplane of all time. I got a thrill out of just sitting in a cockpit simulator of one when I was 20. I have loved these birds since I was a kid and built tons of models of them.

My favorite jet too, I live close to Tyndall AFB and watch F-15's / F-22's fly ball regularly. But when the F-4 drones fly by they by far the most awesome

Quoted: One of my family friends was an F-4 RIO. I never really asked him how it handled. I should. I remember when I was younger I got to sit in one. It was pretty comfy. He did tell us of a story about being in Arizona on maneuvers. His pilot was bumpin along at "treetop level", and made a comment about the pretty trees below them. My friend leaned over to look, eyes go wide and he turns around and says, "those aren't trees, they're cactuses!" The pilot then panicked and pulled up to higher altitude. Even still, there is nothing like that telltale howl one makes while doing a high speed turn. I remember being on the playground and every now and then we'd hear that, and look up at the little grey speck and smile. That's not the plane making the noise. It's the air, screaming in terror, trying to get the fuck out of the way. |

AIM-120 was developed for the F-15 and F-18, generally-speaking. Edit: Germany and Greece may still be operating F-4Es that have been modified to carry the AIM-120 (B?). I couldn't find any photos of them, though. |

My first assignment was to an F-4 base (Bergstrom AFB). What a great plane.

Quoted: One of my favorites, along with the F-5 Tiger http://www.strategic-air-command.com/aircraft/fighter/images/f5_eagle2.jpg Delicious Iranian F-5E and F-5F flying in US prior to delivery to IIAF. I wonder if they're still flying... |

Quoted: Every once in a great while when I lived on Okinawa I'd get to see Japanese F4s http://i410.photobucket.com/albums/pp181/replicators_album/P1010814.jpg The Japanese were fanatical about maintaining all the stencils on their F-4s. There were over 2,000 individual stencils. Wow. |

I overheard my uncle who was a Huey pilot in Vietnam say with all respect, "The F4 is proof that with enough thrust, a brick can fly." I loved to sit and watch them do touch and goes at the Bham airport when I Was a kid. |

lol I used to hear pilots say that all the time. |

I was a jet engine mechanic on them from 79 to 83 at George AFB in Kali. Not much fun crawling into the intake on one of those right after it lands wearing a bunny suit (thats what we called the white overalls we had to wear with velcro on the wrists and ankles so nothing would fall out of our pockets or uniforms and get into the turbine). Would be like a 100+ up in there having to manhandle a 75 lb part off the nose of the engine while inside a 3 foot tunnel was no frikken fun.

They are cool looking!
You can see them flying sometimes around Tucson; they are pulling them out of the Boneyard and modifying them to be target drones. Crews do test flights on them before they are shipped off. |

I always loved the two shades of grey paint scheme. The one true joint fighter that actually worked like it was supposed to.
