THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Here's what the crate looked like when I got it:
Basically I coated the outside with polyurethane, added feet to the bottom of it, and a few other improvements.
I coated the inside of the lid over the map, this picture just gives you an idea of what it looks like.
Here's a detail shot of the cord that keeps the lid from opening all the way. I used an old canvas belt and carpet nails to keep it nailed down.
Over all a pretty simple project, just took a lot of time. It's not 100% done, I'd like to really make some storage compartments for the inside, right now I'm using the original guides for the rifles to keep the DVDs all neat but it's just temporary. I'd also like to put some sort of handle on the side of the lid to make it easier to lift up. |

Is it treated with nasty chemicals to keep bugs from eating it?
I know alot of our crates have/used to have some nasty shit impregnated into them. |

That's very cool. I've been wanting to build a coffee table out of one of those for a long time. I want to fill mine up with Mosins and the accessories that would have been in the crate and replace the top with a piece of glass.

Shouldn't really matter unless he's burning it or eating it. Especially not after the polyurethane sealer. Personally I wouldn't worry, any off-gassing has likely stopped looooong time ago. |

I didn't stick coasters under the bottom, but I get the joke. Damn expensive coasters at that. I'm glad yall like it. Yeah it's pretty simple but I think that's the genus behind it. Also for those who want the guns in it, I take cash, check, or money orders. I think it's around $2200 for a crate full of rifles. If yall send me that, I think I can cover the cost for a piece of glass. |

At first I was thinking "ok, I'm interested" before I saw the outside of the box and thought "how is he going to make that work?" I then saw the wood inside and thought "hey, wood looks good. I think this might turn out alright". And then it was "son, i am disappointment"
See if you can get some of the real wood showing. A drab military color isn't what I was expecting when I opened this thread. |

One, I'd get lazy and not finish the project, or two it'd be a huge pain in the ass to strip every nook and cranny of this thing. Also I would of lost all the cool markings on the crate. I never said this was an original idea, I just thought some people would like it. |

The pictures don't do it justice, it looks nicer than it appears. The polyurethane gave it a nice gloss and smooth texture. Sure it didn't look like it came out of woodworking shop or from an episode of "This Old House" but I'm a college student living in a two bedroom apartment. Haters gonna hate I guess. |

I think you did it right. If you wanted something stripped/finished to high standards, you'd be better off just buying some wood and making a box. This project has a higher coolness factor than that.

Do you really have to use a coaster for your Coke? Come on, single guys don't use coasters.
By the way, name the Mosin crate coffee table"The Panty Dropper", 'cause that is what is going to happen when chicks see your kick ass style. |

Well that coaster is a prototype for another project I've got in the works. If it comes out of Beta stage I'll post more pics. Originally Posted By HommieDaKlown:

Thanks again for the positive feedback. I know it would of looked sweet stripping the whole thing and re-staining it, there's so many areas where the sun don't shine on this crate that to do a good job I'd probably have to take everything on the outside off to make it look right. Also, I wanted to keep the look of it being a surplus military crate, otherwise, as another person pointed out, I would of saved a lot more time and sweat buying a fancy wooden coffee table. |

If you had a crate full of rifles with all the extras in it, used four or six spam cans of ammo as feet, removed the lid and topped with some tempered glass - you'd have a sweet coffee table.
