FOR THE RECORD:

I live in a VERY safe area (ranked in the top ten safest cities in the US) but a 30mile drive south or east and I'm in a 3rd world shit hole. Having said that, SHTF is just a half hour away if there's a social upheaval...

Try M193. It penetrates the fuck out of mild steel. It even zips through some level 3 steel armor plates.

I have found M-855 to do a much better job of punching through mild steel than M-193.
Either way, an inch thick plate should be able to stop just about anything short of a .50, though it would be really heavy. I would go a different route if at all possible. I've been working on a project myself, but progress has been slow. I think something along the line of the Whipple Shield principal would be a better alternative.

A road plate is a large sheet of steel plate that the road crews put down to cover large holes in the road during repair. Cars/and trucks can then drive over the patchwork untill a permament solution is applied.

"Road plate" is actually simply referred to as armored plate in construction.

That's what it was originally made for.

Didn't know that. I did paving work before going into the Marines and always thought that when I heard the term road plate they were referencing the huge steel plates we put down over repair work. Learn something new every day. Thanks for the heads up, sorry for the bad Intel I gave thatdude333.

Kevlar blankets for the walls. By the time a bullet penetrated the outer walls it'd be rather deformed. Deformed bullet hitting a kevlar blanket would hold rather well I imagine.

Kind of expensive, though...

I remember reading about building houses out of stacked used car tires filled with compacted earth, and imagine it'd take 20mm or bigger to get through it.
