Why can't I pay for scratch off lotto tickets with a debt or credit card?

Just wondering since I embarrassed myself the other day after the lady picked me out a dozen scratch offs in OHIO ....ripped them off the rolls and handed them to me. I then tried to pay with my debt card and that was a "no go".

I had no cash on hand and had to leave her with a handful of tickets ripped off the roll.
Keep shooting, my friends...

Good question.

In my travels , I try and buy a couple of tickets in each state I work in . Ive noticed a few that only take cash for them too(cant remember which ones)

And Post Offices wont take a credit card either for their money orders. Dont make sense, if the card is good......why not?

Nice - the State runs a cash-only business.

It must be so you don't dispute the charge when you lose.

Maybe,

Funny since the state now hands out Unemployment Benefits on a creditcard/debit card unless you opt out. But they won't accept a creditcard/debit card for state lotto tickets.

Can you imagine how fast people would rack up their credit card if they were able to buy lotto tickets on it?

Actually depends on the state/commonwealth - in VA you can pay traffic fines via credit cards

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in
defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more
important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is

Charge back goes to the retailer, not the state.

I'm pretty sure that's the same thing here in Illinois. I've never tried to pay for lotto with a bank card. However, I only play lotto rarely, and if I have a spare buck or two that I *can* justify spending on the lotto.

I asked the owner of a store here in my small town and he said its because he actually loses money by paying with a dc/cc because of the surcharge fees if the ticket is a non-winner. And lets face it, there are alot more non-winners than winners. People don't realize that it actually costs the owner of the CC machine every time a card is swiped, whether its for $0.50 or $500.

Stores have to pay a processing fee of 1-4% on all types of debit and credit cards

Stores usually only make .05 cents for selling a scratch off ticket

If you were a store owner, would you take cards to pay for lotto?
Now remember, things look bad and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean.
I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. Cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live nor win. That's just the way it is.

1. It's illegal in some states. It's a gambling addiction prevention thing. They don't want you borrowing money to feed your problem.

2. Profit margins are low. 5% is typical and the CC costs the retailer at least 3%, usually more on small transactions.

There may be other reasons, but those are the big two.

Purchasing lottery tickets with food stamps/"dignity cards" should not only be permitted, it should be encouraged. It just takes the money away from the terminally stupid and puts it back into the system. Better to spend it on roads or something than feeding some scumbag who probably weighs 300 pounds anyway.

An even better idea –– a lottery game playable only by welfare recipients. All the money is returned to taxpayers.

400.00 on a credit card of scratchsd off, don't win, charge back.

That and the fact that credit cards charge merchants a fee, used to be around 1.5-4% depending on volume.
So your $1 scratch off really just brought in $0.96...

Cash only in Illinois, found that when when I tried to buy a couple with filling up the car and paying with plastic.

And in a related story, I hate when they only have them behind the counter, I wish they were all in the machines where they roll out and you tear them off.

It is a stop measure to prevent people from using stolen credit cards or debit cards from buying lotto tickets. I could be wrong, but so far, it works.

I had no cash on hand and had to leave her with a handful of tickets ripped off the roll.

I don't know. I do know the same rule applies to purchasing money orders too though.
