I know it's been a decade or more since I've looked at pre-owned Rolex's with my Dad online - but it seems the days of ~$3500 GMT Master/Sea Dweller/Submariners are gone.

These days MAYBE a nice Explorer II will come close but that's it. Or am I only shopping at high-priced pre-owned places? Is there anywhere else to look?

I would rather not get burned at a pawn shop, I think?

Halp me.

In for the discussion, I've always wanted an oyster perpetual, used of course

Have you looked here? https://www.rolexforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=9
I saw a nice Tudor (Submariner style) for $2400.

I want one that says Rolex on the face, not Tudor.

And I have not signed up for rolex forums yet. I'm not really going to be a rolex enthusiast per se (like I need another expensive hobby), I just want to own one now.

I collect them and have quite a few. The days of the 3000 sport watch is long gone.look on rolexforums for window shopping and market price. You can find a nice used date just in that range though.

Seems on the right tide there can be an Explorer II for around $3500 - I may just go that route.

The vintage Tudor's are growing on me. Someone talk me out of them?

The new Black Bay Tudor's are too high IMO but the old ones are thin like the Rolex's.

Look at the ETA Black Bay, it wears much thinner than the new in-house BB.
While the two watches share the same case, the new movement requires a "bubble back" that makes it wear a few mm "proud" on the wrist.
Over the past two months my ETA Black Bay has run <+1 s/d no matter what I'm doing.

I thought all BB had ETA movements - new ones have in-house made movements?

Any side-pics?

On the Black Bay, if it has the "smilie face" dial and Rose logo it has a ETA movement.
If it has straight line text like a Submariner and the shield logo it's the new Tudor in-house movement.

The Black Bay ETA is 12.7mm thick, crystal to case back.
The Explorer II is 12.4mm thick, crystal to case back.

Well I bought a 1992 Tudor Submariner 36mm with Rolex markings and SS oyster band. Deal was good at $1900-ish for a great condition one.

I may replace the bezel insert with a colored one but we'll see.

As of now this will be a nice entry into the Rolex market and will be a good beater watch when I want an actual Rolex GMT or Submariner in the future.

Buy from one of the grey market sellers at Rolex Forums. Great prices and legit. Check their feedback you will be good to go.

DavidSW comes to mind

IMHO life is too short to settle for less, just save a little more and get what you want. Yes, they have gone up but if you want a Rolex then get one

Because I'm a brand whore

Anyway...

I got my Tudor 75090 in today. I very much like the 36mm case as opposed to the 40mm 'full submariner' case size as my wrist is only 6.8" around.

Kinda growing on me...I think this will be a nice daily watch and a real Rolex will be purchased later this summer.

$3500? Who are you trying to impress?    Just curious.

Rolexes are one of the few (if not only) watches that appreciate in value.  As the new ones go up in price, so do the used ones.  Buying a Rolex is like buying a fine firearm, it will hold value and can be a family heirloom.

I'm old. I remember buying NICE Submariners for around $1000, Datejusts for $600-700, Tudor Subs for $400-500 and so on. Of course that was 25 years ago. You're lucky to find a decent one under $5000 these days, and there are lots of franken-watches running around out there so be careful. Vintage Rolex can be somewhat of a minefield. I wish I'd kept every one I ever owned, along with the Omega Speedmaster Professionals that I let get away years ago when they were a $500 watch.

I bought my Tudor Submariner in 1984 for 800 if I remember. I've worn it everyday since except for the time I spent in Afghanistan.  For reference, I could have bought an HK94A3 with all the fixings plus paid for a hooker for that money in 1984...

Ebay seller who was willing to deal outside of ebay - he was in my state and had a storefront a few hours from me so he was legit.

Got lucky, I guess.

Want to get a used Rolex for $3500-$4500? Start calling divorce lawyers and ask if they have clients looking to unload.

Yes. Lawyers are all coin operated. The faster the liquidation and higher price the better for them.

But it can be a crap shoot. Messy divorce = Rolex thrown out the window down on his BMW.

Prepare to have it serviced.

Divorce lawyers also get a lot of stuff from clients in lieu of cash.
The one I know has a huge gun collection that came from clients who were gun rich/cash poor and paid their bill in guns.
I'm sure there are lawyers who've done the same with watches.

This thread is 25% great and 75% absolutely shit.

I still read the whole thing.   I’d buy a Rolex tonight, but I’m so addicted to lume.  Just bought my third Ball watch this morning.  I can’t get watch without that tritium.

A friend of mine figured it out, so obvious.   I used to make the stuff.   That’s my connection to it.

The Rolex 50th anniversary was released almost 10 years ago......it was welcomed with a somewhat lukewarm reception.....here in the last year or so there has been a resurgence.....For me it’s a great looking watch but I don’t know if I could revert to an old style bracelet now that I have a glidelock on my Submariner ...glidelock was released approx 7 years ago with ceramic submariner
