Sorry I'm not a watch guy, would love to have a nice one but I'm to rough on them.  I have a Casio Pathfinder that I got when I deployed to AFG as they said get a watch with a compass.

Anyway, my son is graduating high school in a month and I would like to get him as good a watch as I can for ~300 or less.  He has been  looking at the MVMT watches specifically this one
https://www.mvmtwatches.com/collections/classic/products/black-black-watch
or this one
https://www.mvmtwatches.com/collections/all-mens-watches/products/chrono-gun-metal

I was looking at the field watch thread and really liked some of the watches on there, but he does not like to have numbers on his watch and likes metal link bands.

I do not know or have heard of the MVMT watches, they have a neat story but don't know if it is worth the $

Any ideas?  I think water proof would be good also, movement does not matter to much.

thanks, appreciate any ideas!

Field watches usually come in formats that won't tick his check boxes - they usually have canvas or leather straps, and usually have numerals on the dial.

Have you considered a dive watch? There are plenty of good divers out there. Seiko (skx007) and Orient (Ray, Mako) make good automatic divers with metal bracelets around that price point. If he wants quarts, check this out:

I mention this one in particular because, like that MVMT watch, it's a chronograph, but it has real water resistance.

I'd recommend looking at some watches from Citizen.

They are quality watches and the Eco-Drive movements (quartz with a battery that is charged by light) are durable and require essentially zero maintenance.  If y'all find some watches of interest on their site, search for the model number on Google/Amazon and they can be found quite a bit cheaper than the listed MSRP.

For me my watch is a very personal thing and I am pretty particular about it. For me my watch is an extension of myself and a part of my character being that I wear mine 24/7. Having said that my point is if your son has specifically mentioned favoring one of those listed above I recommend getting him one of those as he will enjoy it more.

Based on what your son listed I think this Movado or a Skagen would suit him well. The Movado is a little higher in price than your listed.

Personally my Non-luxury watch brand of preference is Hamilton, specifically the field khaki.

My advice is buy your son a cheapo that he likes and buy yourself a timeless luxury watch for yourself like a Rolex or Omega and wear it but keep it pristine. In 4 years when he graduates from college or gets married or has a child give it to him. The sentimental value would be the icing on the cake in addition to get a fantastic timepiece once he is age and life accomplishments to wear one without being ostentatious.

Thanks, I like the advice.  Costco had the Skagens and I was able to look at one, very sleek thin, almost look fragile.  They also had some Citizens at good prices. I like what you said about getting a nice watch and passing it down, will have to think about it as I don't think I could afford a nice watch till they are out of school. Every watch that I showed him I like, field or divers, he does not like, even with that said I do think he would like the pass down.

costco had these, both for 199.00 each, ( I think these were the ones or very close to them)

http://www.citizenwatch.com/en-us/watches/watch-detail/?model=CA0295-58E

this is the Skagens the had for 99.00, but it is discontinued so not on Costco web site any more

I would like to get a nice watch but I'm very hard on them like I said, that said, the Shinola watches have a place in my heart as I am from Detroit, that plus I just like the looks.  Are they any good?  or are they just a flash in the pan?  Costco also has them a little cheaper then on line but i just love this one:
https://www.costco.com/Shinola-Runwell-Chronograph-Stainless-Steel-Men's-Watch.product.100329013.html

they also have a few more in the store that they do not have online, is online the best places to fine the deals?

thanks again for the help,

MVMT are $5 watches with $100 logos.

Steer wide of them.

Citizen has a whole line of blacked out watches called Axiom.

The Eco-Drives are quartz, but solar powered, so it should last for 20 something years before needing servicing.

AT2245-57E is the reference for this watch.

Well I had pretty much landed on this one;

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0057978O0?tag=vglnk-c102-20

Was not to sure about Tissot, never heard of them but reviews all except for one model I stayed away from were good.

Now looking at the one you posted I will have to look at them again.

thanks,

Just would like to say thanks and I thought I would follow up with what I got him, Orient Men's 'Symphony Gen. II'

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M05OKMQ?tag=vglnk-c102-20

Wife received a amazon 20% off coupon and it was less when I ordered it so it was 190.00 delivered, think that is a good deal, hope it is a good watch.

Son really liked it, he has small writs so he had to have quite a few links taken out but all is good.

Was looking at an EcoDrive, but coupon did not work on that one,

thanks again,
