I'm planting 4 different plants and trying to figure out the best trellis for them. I'm thinking about using 2 hog panels tied at the top with their ends anchored by 4 metal fence posts. It will stand about 16 ft tall. The plants will be planted at the corners. Anyone use a setup like this? Basically using this as opposed to a pole as I have them.

hog/cattle panels kinda suck IMO.

get a 8' T post, drive into ground, add a cross bar, hang cheap rope.

cheaper, and easier to store.  Its also a hell of a lot easier to clean up.

YMMV

I use 2 twenty foot flag poles with a rig spanning them made out of pvc. I then attach twine to the 4 corners and can then raise it during spring and lower it for harvest. No muss no fuss. no ladder.

Is 8' tall enough.  I thought these things grew to 14'.  Are they self limiting?

i think you can train them to grow horizontally

That would be a lot handier.

I grew 4 plants horizontally last year and they did ok with the exception of the two that got hit by japanese beetles.

They take a bit of training to get them to wrap my fence posts though. Once they were trained they took the fence just fine.

Six plants this year.  I am not smart enough to stop doing new things.  There should be some sort of program.

I planted 4 Nugget and 2 goldings a couple weeks ago.  They're just starting to come up.  I'm planning on using rope for them to grow on.

That's what I do.  Easier to maintain and harvest too.

I planted mine in the alley behind my house.  I have a 6' privacy fence, but the ground slopes away from the fence so the top is more like 8' from the ground.  I'm going to run ropes from the ground to the top of the fence, and then train them horizontally from there.
