Unproven/fringe/whatever, but still interesting nonetheless.

Unfortunately, they left out one of the most important theories in physics.

On a serious note, "Technical Error" is a badass story, and really one of Clarke's most clever.

The founder and owner of a company I used to work for, Terry Witt, published a very slick, high-end book called "Our Undiscovered Universe", describing Terry's theory of "null physics".  Terry's a great guy and great to work for, but when I was talking to him about his theory, he said, "You know when you can tell if something's true?  It just sounds right!"
I had trouble keeping a straight face.  What happened to the scientific method?
Anyway, his book and the word "crackpot" are often found in the same sentence.  I've read reviews by actual physicists (Terry's a programmer with a medical background) and they're not kind, at all.

Theories are NEVER "proven"

Ekpyrotic Universe

The Ekpyrotic Model of the Universe proposes that our current universe arose from a collision of two three-dimensional worlds (branes) in a space with an extra (fourth) spatial dimension.

It is hard enough to verify many portions without being diverted with things that are really 'out there.'

It just took 100 years to show Einsteins prediction of gravity waves.

It took that long to develop technology and then figure out how to use it.
The general press has been (as usual) very ignorant.
The 'trick' came from analyzing the noise signals generated by the newest detectors.A far from 'new' thing in signal detection, SIGINT, ELINT, and electronics warfare.

Correlated noise is a BIG deal.
