I want to buy a lot of lenses to make cell phone microscopes:

http://www.instructables.com/id/10-Smartphone-to-digital-microscope-conversion/

I've used laser pointer lenses, but they don't work that great, I've had better results with a dvd writer lens.  Unfortunately I don't have a lot of dvd drives to tear up (need 10 or so).

Anyone know what kind of lenses I might need (description etc) so I can try and find them from http://www.surplusshed.com/lens.cfm

Or anyone know a place to order these things?

Thanks.

There's a link at the bottom of the instructables page that takes you to this and says they will work fine:

Were you looking for something else?

Yeah, I got those... they work, but not that great.  I think they are a little too small.  The DVD writer lens is about 9-10mm in diameter and works better... I'd like to order similar ones.

I ordered one of these to try out:

AixiZ Blue Laser Glass Lens for 405-455nm

Keep in mind specific color lenses will have significant chromatic aberration in other colors and white light.

The laser lens I mentioned seems to be working well, if any of you want to try this.  It is a fun project.

Post some pics.

I've been thinking about building one of these, but I'm not convinced that it's for real.

I would love to see the results of an image created with a DIY microscope using this system.

Optical resolution could be improved by only using 633nm Red LEDs for illumination, then taking a picture and converting it to greyscale.  That would get rid of any chromatic abberations, but would also leave you with a non-color image.

I built one today. So far I can't get the damn thing to focus no matter what I do.

I'm leaning towards "BS"
