While cleaning up, I found my WISC III results from when I was in school. Its one of the tests they accept as proof of being smart. Qualifying composite IQ for that test is 130, mine is 147.  With all the stupid shit I do all the time; I think I need some proof that I'm actually a certified genius, instead of half retarded.

Waste of time or is it an actual good resource? My interest would mainly be for networking connections.

Correct, not GD.

Hence I asked it where I would, presumably, get less jackassery.

Here's a challenge for you OP. Take a proctored test by MENSA.  If you qualify I will PayPal you the cost of the test and one year's membership.  You just have to confirm you are taking the challenge and also post your results in this thread.

Why?  He should just have to submit the scores he has, no?

Looks like the have some sort of special offer through the end of the month, to "review" those scores for free.  I guess normally you have to pay somebody to go, "yup, that's a valid test...  Yup, that's a qualifying score." http://www.us.mensa.org/join/testscores/qualifyingscores/

Like I said, I didnt post this in GD because I wasnt trying to do a look at me type thread. I just wanted to know if there were members here and if they found it useful or not.

I dont need to take the proctored test. Thats for folks that dont already have proof of their IQ. But you asked for it, so here it is. Do I still get membership dues?

All professional societies do that.

My IEEE dues are 200 damn bucks a year. IEEE membership is super useful.

Hence, me asking about Mensa membership. Wanting to know if that's worth it or not.

You still have to submit your test results for their evaluation.

You will then receive either a thin envelope, or a thick envelope.

If you want to join for networking, the answer is yes, but they may figure out that that is the only reason you joined, too.

I joined in the early 90s and went to a meeting.

I applied for a scholarship that qualified me for.

Unfortunately the scholarship went to someone with a totally stupid concept but was all touchy feely and politically correct.
(We gave it to the quadriplegic that wants to go pre-med so they can be a doctor and the blind person that wants to be a mechanical engineer)

Anyways, the meeting was nice people,
but mostly a bunch of under achievers whose claim to fame was they have a top two percentile IQ.

This meets the definition of genius, but it is not like what most people think of as a genius-
the super scary smart 4 or 5 standard deviation above the mean types.

My GRE qualified me for some 1% club that did not have a scholarship to apply for and I did not join, but they did seem to be a little more physician, engineer, etc. type professions.

I would say pass.

Back in the day, seems like the late 80s, I took the test and passed and went to a few meetings.

It was partying, drinking, BSing and all that. It was just a social thing, no puzzles or real exercise
of what made you a member. No fun, I would rather play D&D, chess or write software so I kind of
drifted away and did my own thing. I am sure that all the chapters aren't like that, weren't
like that, but it kind of seemed pointless with the local crowd.

It was a choice between the Computer Club and Mensa, and I am now a pro developer so I feel
I made the correct decision.

ETA: Maybe things are different now. I will look into it. I have 2 kids that have tested over 130
maybe the girl would be interested. The boy is into coding and doesn't like to spend too much
time away from the compiler. Also I married a former mensa member. She quit because it was
a sausage fest, she says.

Thank you.

And for the OP -- the offer still stands.

Agree to sit for a MENSA proctored exam.  http://www.us.mensa.org/join/testing/

I will Paypal you $40 for the test fee.  (You will recognize that this is a sweeter deal than my first challenge.  Now I'm offering to pay for the testing fee regardless of the result of that test).

You MUST post results of that test in this thread regardless of what the score shows.

If those results show that you qualify for MENSA membership I will Paypal you the annual fee.   Since you already paid it without following the terms of my challenge then you can consider it a reimbursement.

P.S.  OP -- don't call me welch.  Ever.

It's a good group of people, and opportunities to grow professionally are yours for the taking.

As for Mensa, if you qualify and it's in the budget, why not try it.  Otherwise you'll be left wondering.  I expect that that the experience you get will vary widely by an area's local participants.  If you were an 18-ish male in some areas, for example, you might be surprised to find some older women in the group would find you just fascinating.  In another group, you might find pretentiousness and intellectual snobbery.  In another, ?

I've never seen the point. It has not been my experience that intelligent people to share some camaraderie or bond just by virtue of being smart. If you want to associate with smart people, get involved in some activity or club which you enjoy and which attracts smart people, so you'll have some common interest.

I don't need to have proof of my intelligence, I know where I lack, there are lots of people who use their MENSA membership as a status symbol. Don't be one of those guys

I learned a long time ago, IQ doesn't mean squat. I know a few people with high IQ's that can't function in society. A high IQ doesn't help if you don't have the ability or know how to use it.
