What is considered the best one to get?

Not looking for the cheapest, but one that works and that will last.

The brand "Food Saver" is the best if you ask me. I bought a cheaper one before and it turned out to be junk.

My old one needs to get replaced.  Saw one at BJ's but it didn't have one of the features I liked: a heat sealer to seal bags.  Make sure you get one with a vacuum port so you can use the cannisters.  Works great to save cheese, like 1/2 onion, whatever

I have several of the canisters and they were basically a waste of time. Even when new, just sitting on the shelf they would lose their seal.

I'm not sure there is a "best".  Mine is almost 10 years old and still ticking along, with no problems.  My advice to you is to read up on the consumer reviews on various sites for the various models.  That's what I did before I bought.
I absolutely cannot imagine life as a single person without my FoodSaver.

I read about these and decided not to buy them.  People were saying the same thing you are.

But I did buy the containers that go into your refrigerator--and they work very well.  Seems to keep lunchmeat fresher for longer, and keeps premade casseroles that I divided good for a longer time period.

We bought a $70.00 one a year or two ago at Target. It definitely keeps frozen meats fresh for a long time.
We figured we'd try an inexpensive one first to see if we liked  it, then if it wore out would see about a pricier model. It's been great so far.

OP

I've run through a few sealers, mainly they get burned out when doing a large lot of food, say deer or salmon run. They also suck at more than a couple things at once

I would (will) get this

http://sealers101.com/2012/04/12/nozzle-snorkel-vacuum-sealers/

It allows you to use cheaper/better bags as well as mylar bags.

If you order from sorbent systems you get free bags.

They get good reviews on the survival forums- and you know how crazy those guys are

Just killed a ten year old pro II, it had done 10 cows, 4 pigs and God knows how many deer an fish.

Foodsaver has a sale right now.

I wanted this:
http://www.foodsaver.com/vacuum-sealers/outdoor-vacuum-sealers/the-foodsaver-gamesaver-titanium-vacuum-sealer-w--bonus-offer/FSGSSL0800-DTCK2.html

Continually seals 100 bags an limit lifetime warranty.

But bought this:
http://www.foodsaver.com/vacuum-sealers/foodsaver-professional-vacuum-sealer/FSFSSL0320-000.html

Continually seals 25 bags an 5 year limit  warranty. It's better then my last one that lasted ten years.

With any "foodsaver", if you overheat it, your killing it.

Now, to grind the doe thats hanging in the cooler.
