Thoughts on the pit barrel cooker?  Thinking of pulling the trigger on one but is it worth the $ 300 price Tag?  I currently only have a gas grill that's falling apart.

What one?  Offset fire box type?

If you can hold out a bit longer, they will all be on sale.

I never liked my barrel smoker, it did work though.  too much of a pain to keep coals stoked.

I ended up with a New braunfels offset smoker...the heavy us made one.  Now they come from china.

But there are still some china made ones that work well, for under 300 at wallmart.  Oklahoma joe brand.

Did you have the exact one I listed?

No, mine was homemade.  Still, with the firebox on the bottom, you will be on your knees a lot.

It worked well, I just wanted to be upright.  You will be stoking that thing every couple hours or less.

Not according to the reviews. One fill up lasts around 8 hours at 225 to 250. Guess I'll be testing that out soon.

For $300 I could build 2 Ugly Drum Smokers that would be a better smoker and have money left over

Honestly I thought about doing that but I just don't have the time.  After more research it appears I made a good decision going forward with the pit barrel cooker. At least for my needs. Thanks for the help though.

I don't have a Pit Barrel Cooker.... I have had and competed on UDS even 30gal ones that the PBC is built off of. They work amazingly well!! don't get hung up on who makes it. PBC work just like UDS work ones store bought once not. get it!! you will enjoy it. :)

Ok did my first cook 4 chicken breasts and 2 slabs of baby backs. Chicken was done at exactly 2 hours. I'm not a good chicken cook as I always over cook them. Pulled it at 165 and they were so very very good. Ribs I pulled at exactly 3.5 hours (I should have pulled them about 20 mins earlier) they were falling of the bone. I'll try to post pics. It's been 5 hours since I started the grill and temps are still a steady 250 to 275. So far I am extremely pleased.

I have a PBC and I love it. Everything I have cooked on it was good. I am cooking things on it that I have never cooked before, and they turn out awesome... Ribs, pork shoulders, whole chickens, etc.  The videos on YouTube for it are great for ideas, I always watch one or two before cooking something.

I have a thread on page three, I think, about when I got mine.

I'll look into that. So far by following the tips on the PBC website everything has been great. Did some thick bone in ribeyes today. They were damn good.

Chicken thus far is one of my favorite items to cook on it. Ribs are great on it too. I want to try a brisket but I'm terrible at cooking them.

Today's ribs were my third time cooking them and the best so far.  Used Dillo Dust as a rub, cooked in the barrel for about 3 hours, then wrapped them with butter, brown sugar, and honey and put them on the rack in the barrel for about another hour.  Fell off the bones!

Have a 12 lb brisket on right now. Pecan and mesquite chunks. It hit 160 so now it's wrapped for the final push. Hopefully I don't mess is up. I'm very bad at brisket  so this is my first one in the PBC.

Ok I did a 12 lb brisket wrapped it at around 3 and a half hours. Pulled it at just shy of 4.5 at temp of 205 ( I should have pulled it earlier). Over all it was damn tender but a little drier than I liked. Next time I'll leave more fat and monitor it a bit closer. Some parts were damn tender and juicy but some parts were just tender. It being my first try in the PBC I was pretty happy with the results. Had a nice smoke ring.

So you smoked a 12 pound brisket in only 7 and a half hours, what temp were you running?

It varies 250 to 300. I just did what the web vids said and it worked.
