Have any of you got the temp controller rigs?  I have been thinking about one for a couple of years.

Any pros or cons? It would be for a large egg if it makes a difference.

Never tried one and I've done shorter and much longer cooks.  I've been able to hold consistent temps fairly easy once my settings are set.

What is driving you to possibly get a temp controller?  Peace of mind?

I went 15 years without one, but would get up overnight to check the Egg.  If the charcoal settles, ash can collect and snuff out the fire.  When I was working nights, this happened twice and I vowed never again.  For the $150+ meat I lost in those two, it only cost me that to get a temp controller about 5 yrs ago.

I'm now a dealer for the three big brands and the one I sell the most of is the cheapest and simplest.  You turn the dial to the temp you want, and that's it.  There are other units that offer ramp up/down functions, alarms, WiFi, etc.......none of which I ever use on the BGE.  I use those functions on my Rebel 23, but that because it takes forever to change the temp on that monster.  If you have a Maverick or other remote thermometer, you already have most of those extra functions covered anyway.

It's a lot easier to explain all this over the phone, so send me an email/IM with your phone number if you want to chat.

Just got an Auber Instruments one, it's great.

Just set the temp using the inlet to get it at a good starting point, then setup the controller, put in your shit and come back hours later. DUN SON.

I'm enjoying starting the grill in the morning and just grabbing my dinner when it's done that night. Brisket, ribs, salmon, roasts, easy as hell.

I am a constant tinkerer. I can't let the vents on the egg be. I was thinking a set it and forget it deal would be nice.

Awesome! Thanks for the offer. It will be another couple of months before I do anything. What is the brand/model of your best seller?

The DigiQ is a good unit......but I sell less each year because they're the oldest technology and the most expensive units.  They work great, but by the time you add the probes, fan, and adapter, you're looking at a lot of money.  Kind of like the BGE, they're the original and have the price to prove it.  But there are now newer units that do the exact same thing (or more) for less money.

Some people have good luck with the Aubers, but I get a lot of people buying controllers from me to replace their Auber that never worked right.  I don't carry them.  In any case, they're more expensive than the unit most people buy.

Most people end up getting the Pitmaster 110 or 120.  They're a great unit and include everything you need (adapter, probes, etc.)  I can sell those much lower than the others, so I'm sure it has something to do with it.  I've run all of them, and I still use a 110 on my BGE and a 120 on my Rebel.  It's a just a simple set it and forget it--but it has the power and technology to run everything from a Small BGE to a 28 cu-ft Rebel.

These pictures are old......has the Gen1 version of the 110.  Gen2 has a damper door built into the box.

me too! my mother-in-law gave me my 110 for Christmas in 2013. love it! use it on my wsm and it's truly set it and forget it. it'll hold that temp till the fuel runs out. you can take a nap, go run errands or watch the game and not have to worry about your temps.
