With every ham we buy, we also pick up a pack of bean soup.
The day after ham dinner is bean soup night. Leftover ham on the bone flavors it nicely. |

I like the "Manischewitz" soups tubes (sometimes it's in the ethnic sections).
Note however, varying the size of the bean greatly (as in 16 Bean Soup) is a good way to get bad soup. Follow the directions to the letter. I never was able to get it right so just stuck with the ones with beans all about the same size.
Bean soup is a great starter to a heartier soup. I add cabbage, tofu, ham (bone in or just cubed ham from near the lunchmeat section), onions, garlic clove halves, celery, alphabet noodles, etc. |

Went to the market to get split peas to make soup day after Easter. SOLD OUT! Saw 16 bean mix on shelf. Why not? Turned out awesome! Do what I used to when I was a bachelor. Make a triple batch and freeze most of it. Great time saver.

Thanks for the reminder, I have a few tubes of Manischewitz bean soup mixes and some other brands. Other than the flavor packet having a shit-ton of sodium, they rock!

It's good stuff. I forget the common name brand but it's better than the Safeway brand.
The "ham" base is really salty so I don't add any additional salt. Throw in some smoked sausage and don't skimp on the lemon juice. |

I just made up a big pot of it- turned out pretty tasty! We dont use the spice/flavor packet that comes with it. Used some cut up deer steak, onion, garlic, parsley, thyme, pepper, a bit of steak seasoning, jar of our canned potatoes an a jar of our canned tomatoes, couple handfuls of barley and some beef base....made up a batch of fresh cornbread and it was a great meal!

Throw in some smoked sausage and don't skimp on the lemon juice. my local albertsons here in albuquerque carries "hurst's hambeens", courtesy of indianapolis indiana. not sure what's available in your area. great stuff, have a pot going as we speak.. ditto on bumping up the lemon juice. most of the time i make it without meat, but that's because i'll start off with a stock of several pounds of ham hocks hard simmered for 12-24, then all the solids strained out. there's plenty of meaty goodness, it's just all in the broth. i start my posole and frijoles off the same way. |

Damn good and freezes well. Make a pot and when you get tired of it freeze the rest.

Yeah, that Hurst's Hambeens seems to be the prominent national brand.
Throw some pig meat in and you're good to go. |
