Some GOPers want SAFE Act changes tied to rent control extension
New Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan, who replaced Skelos last week, has assured upstate members he will push for changes to Gov. Cuomo’s controversial 2013 SAFE Act gun control law.
But a number of Republicans remain skeptical.
Assemblyman Bill Nojay (R-Livingston County) said one way for Flanagan--who voted for the gun control measure--to prove he is serious is to refuse to pass any extension of the rent regulation laws without agreement on “meaningful” SAFE Act changes.
“Otherwise, it’s a con and we’re not going to let him get away with it,” Nojay said.
Flanagan on Sunday listed changes to the SAFE Act among the Senate GOP's top priorities before the legislative session ends next month.
"My Senate Republican colleagues and I believe it is time to make common-sense reforms to the SAFE Act," he said.
But insiders say it's unlikely Cuomo and the Assembly Democrats would consider any significant changes.
