Instead of leading me on the road, Sarah kept a short distance behind me.  As I was heading downhill, I saw why. A black bear, probably 200 lbs, was sitting there peacefully.  I halted and Sarah passed me when she finally spotted it and halted ahead of me.  We had a Mexican standoff at 100 yards distance.  I'm calling to the dog to return to my side and Sarah being Sarah ignores me.

Finally the bear gets up and turns so I can see its profile.  As it turns to walk away, Sarah suddenly bursts into a run, tearing after it.  I'm following behind the best I could, shouting, "No!  No! Sarah! Come here!"  She chases the bear around the corner and out of sight.  "Sh*t, I think, she going to get mauled and I can't even reach her in time.  Anyway, Sarah reappears and turns around and barks victoriously at the bear.  After all, she defended her territory.  I called her back several times and walking backwards, walk away from the scene.  Sarah catches up and stays closely by my side this time.

I've seen bears in the area before and even their scat, but never on my land.  Darn critters don't respect property lines.

My brother quit taking his dog in the mountains because of bears. She would go exploring, find a Bear and lead it back to him. After the third or fourth time he said "No More"

Good dog (if it's bear season).
