So a few days ago my dog started having a little bit of a limp in his walk. I think he jumped off the bed onto the hard wood floor and may have done something. Anyways its started to get a bit worse over the past couple days. I don't think its too serious as I can move it around push/pull and touch the entire thing + shoulder -etc-. But recently hes been licking/chewing at this spot on his leg (The upper black area is from when he slid his leg across concrete trying to catch a ball a year or two ago, hair has never grown back).

Today he really started to favor it though. I was gonna go pick up some anti inflammatory/pain killer from my vet tomorrow. He did this same thing to his rear leg in may. But what I'm concerned about now is the open wound. What can I do about it? clean it and just put some gauze pads on it + vet wrap?

We use a prescription spray called Bentigen I believe, "not sure if the spelling is correct" for hot spots which is similar.
We spray twice a day and over a weeks time heals up. It also seems soothing because the dogs dont seem to keep messing with the area. Check with the vet.

Does your dog ever start to limp from it? Just wondering if there could be two things going on. Be it he hurt himself when he jumped down and has a bruise or something, AND now this is a secondary? Or if the hot spot is causing the initial limping.

IME once a dog gets like that going, they will never leave it alone and typically make it worse.

Try the cone of shame (along with the antiseptic, etc.) and see if it improves.

There is literally no cone that my dog couldnt destroy... Tried it when I had him neutered. He is too smart. They gave me every type of cone they had, just a no go :(

Will see if I can find an antiseptic and maybe getting some kind of sock to stay on or something. But yeah never had anything this bad on him.

My dad used two things on his hunting dogs.

A cut/sore that could get infected got bag balm.  You used to be able to buy it at feed stores.  Used for cow udders, etc. where they get scratched in the fields/woods back when cows lived outside and many farms weren't all plowed fields of grain/hay.

For the itchy red spots the dogs chewed the hair off of he'd mix up sulfur and oil (don't remember what kind of oil/grease) and smear on the spot.  The sulfur did the magic, the oil/grease was just to keep the stuff on the spot and keep the dog from licking it very much.

So my vet gave me "Gentamicin" which is Betagen apparently. Said spray twice a day over a week and it should go away.It definitely keeps him from messing with it. Since I've been putting it on he hasn't really tried to bite/lick at it at all.
