It depends on if you need wide area tracking or not. If you need wide area tracking, i.e. many miles, then you need a cellular based system and it will cost you a monthly subscription fee.
It also depends on whether or not you need the info to come to your cell phone or computer. If so, then you need a cellular based system and it will cost you a monthly subscription fee.
And finally is depends on whether you need automated geo-fence monitoring. If so, then you need a cellular based system and it will cost you a monthly fee.
If, however, you can live with a mile or two of range and be responsible for monitoring you own dogs, then a
Garmin Astro is the heat. I have an Astro with two collars, one for each dog, and when we go for walks or hiking I bring the receiver with me. When one or both are out on the property on their own I will check on them periodically and if one is "missing" I'll fire up the handheld and check on things. Most of the time they are patrolling in the wood line around the house, but every once in a while they go walkies to the neighbors and I've got to go on round up duty. I've only had them since February and they are still learning. My 10 month old pup is better than my 7.5 year old rescue!
I downloaded a satellite photo into the Astro to make it easier to see where the dogs are. It's very cool! Here's a photo of my 10 month old boy wearing his Astro collar, something both dogs do from first outs to last outs every day. I use one of
these tags on the collar for good measure so they don't have to wear a million collars all at once.
