I took over care of a yellow Ackie Monitor (Spiny tailed lizard),  a couple years back. I couldn't stand to see it treated the way it was being taken care of. Little food, bad environment....so on, and so on.

It's a tricky little animal to maintain and it needs a good home. I just don't know what to do at this point. I have tried the local university, some herp forum's and the like, but I just want this little dude to have a better home.

I can maintain, but that was never my plan. It needs a at leat a 3x4 on the surface with at least 2ft of dirt below it to burrow; and a ton of heat (lamps/lights). It should be fed live insects regularly.

How do I find a home for a rare lizard?

Also, it has lost some of it's tail and two toes from dehydration and will most likely not be a good partner/mate. Which seems to be the going motivation for buying monitors these days.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Well, he's not big enough to make a pair of boots out of...But maybe a nice concealed carry holster?

How about letting your local herp club/society know about him. Might be able to adopt him out to someone that knows and is capable of dealing with it.

Not me...got rid of all the monitors years ago. Got tired of drywall repairs....damned blood monitors are stronger than they look  The rough neck monitors were a hoot too. Lots of fun trying to catch those idiots.

I remember when those were going for over a grand.

Been awhile since I was in the Herp game, as soon as I get a new place I'm getting back into it.

If it wasn't for my building regs and the distance I would take it off your hands right now.

Neat looking lizard OP. I honestly couldn't tell you. I know a guy who collects weird snakes, but I don't think he dabbles in lizards. Seems to be more work.

I've had to catch escape artists known as Crocodile Monitors on multiple occasions. That was always fun.

I've exhausted those options over and over.  I don't even want money for this dude. I just want a stable owner that can feed it and heat it.

Crocodile monitors were too expensive back when, for me to consider them. Sold them, shipped them...but didn't want to own one.

He goes limp as soon as you control it. As far as temperament with other monitors, I have no idea...... and would suggest that it is a bad idea to assume it will be able to get along with others.

There are herp rescues out there, I know of one in SW Ohio that takes in everything from tortoises to gators. I can't remember the name off the top of my head since I've been out of the herp circles for 8+ years now. No university zoology department in the area to contact? NKU was affiliated with the Ohio herp collector/enthusiast society when I was a member.

I wish I could help, but I don't currently have the space for a monitor, even though I've wanted one for a long time.

Thanks. I have tried all local outlets. Rescues are miss or miss for me right now. From what I am getting, its a space issue and I totally understand.

That is indeed a shame because they offered sage advise.

Here is some more, if you don't care for the majority of opinions on this website, perhaps you would feel more comfortable posting on the Democrat Underground.  I'm sure there you will find more like minded deviants that enjoy disgusting reptiles crawling around and shitting all over their home.
