Is he a plush coat GSD or a Shiloh Shepherd? He looks a lot like one of our Shiloh's brother! View Quote I've had a couple other people ask me if he's a Shiloh. I had heard about Shilohs before, but never knew anything about them until a couple of people asked me last week if he was one. After looking up what they looked like I see how someone would think he's a Shiloh. He's a plush coat GSD. |

Her problem with gunfire is wanting to chase the projectile. :) I've had her around gunfire a dozen times or better, just keep her far enough back it's not hard on her ears, and tied up or in the house if I'm shooting at home. It's just like anything else with her, she wants to be right in the middle of it, involved.

My GSD Huey loves going shooting with me. Once, I loaded everything up and left him at home and my wife said he sat by the door crying and moaning for 2 hours while I was gone. As soon as I start running stuff out to the truck he posts up in front of the door.
It took a while to get him to stay behind me while I was shooting. He always wanted to sit right at the base of the target. Now he usually lays beside me or under the truck if its a little warm out. My wife likes to shoot clay pigeons with her 22 so we just scatter and lay a bunch of them out for her to shoot. When he was a pup he used to pick them up and bring them back to us. Sometimes we'll still toss em for him like a frisbie and laugh when he gets all confused when they shatter. |

I jump in the shower and scrub off the ticks, and let the water fill the tub, and he sits on the bathroom floor waiting his turn. I finish, and get out, and he jumps in and I then get to spend the next 30 minutes scrubbing him down. My wife then raises hell about the mess we made . He is an amazing dog, and has sold me on forever getting GSDs or a Mali. My wife however is extremely opposed to going to any kind of a breeder so I will probably use the GSD or Mali adoption specific websites, and driving to get the dog. I hope this is a long time away, because I honestly don't even want to think about Bear passing. For being 9 years old, he acts just like a puppy and has the energy of one too |

Any tips, we lost our last dog a few weeks ago and I haven't done the puppy thing in 12 years. For some reason I'm a little stressed |

My teenage daughter will be home with ours for 6 weeks during the day and after that I will have to crate or kennel during the day but I can come home for an hour or so daily. Built up the crate time to where he was in it for maybe 16hrs a day, total. Maybe a little less. He's still really young, but he's in it less now. Maybe 12 hrs a day. We still put him in it every night unless we're traveling, in which case he's in the bed. Every dog and owner are different so you have to feel it out. Welding gloves was only half a joke. Socialize the shit out of you're dog but use your judgement until his shots are finished. Mine has hung out with about ten other dogs but only from family or my 2 neighbors whose dogs I know never really leave the cul de sac. Babies too. Mine has been around half a dozen or so infants and toddlers and is super sweet with them. He doesn't inhale his food and just grazes so I refill his bowl as needed. He's at 16# now and gets maybe 4-5oz of raw meat for dinner on top of his kibble. Plenty of water, tons of attention, lots of love, and always training. The meat counter at your grocery store is a good place to get small beef bones for him. It'll take him an hr or 2 to chew the marrow out and you'll appreciate that time. Your daughter being home with yours will be great as long as she's up to it and can stay consistent. Some people probably disagree with how Im doing things but it's working for us. Try to remember he doesn't understand and just wants to play with and please you and please you. You'll get frustrated at times, but try not to show it. Most of all, enjoy it. They're awesome dogs. Congrats! |
