THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT

His name is Gabriel and we just picked him up from a friends house. Apparently she had rescued him from an abusive home last year and spent the time rehabilitating him. He's a little shy around me and my roommate but hopefully he'll warm up a little more and be the kinda dog that watches the race on Sunday with me on the couch.

That's the love seat, so if he'd rather hang out on it that's fine... More leg room for me lol!

Get rid of that wanna be tough looking collar.. its doesnt do the dog world a bit of good seeing a pit in a spiked collar like that..
I cringe when i see owners putting tough looking collars on these beautiful creatures.. those collars where designed to ward of bites from other dogs and other animals..

Go buy him a nice collar.. :))
and i love him.. love pit bulls.. raised em for years..

Congrats on the gorgeous pit! Wonderful breed. I agree about the collar. Doesn't exactly help alleviate people's fears about the dogs.

The collar is going as soon as my paycheck comes in tomorrow. Its too big on him anyway. For some reason he avoids me 99% of the time and is attached at the hip to my female roommates.

Nylon collars at the pet tore are less than $8. Been using them for 20 years and they come in sizes up to 24".

Just an update on Gabriel, he's warmed up to me substantially since we got him. The only problem is that he's extremely aggressive towards other dogs while on walks. And god forbid anyone who comes over the house do anything but sit still on the couch. I don't honestly have any real idea on how to break him from this and get him used to friends and family coming over.

Nonetheless today is a big day for him and I feel horrible for it. Today... He goes for the old snip at the vets office. Wish him luck and cross your legs guys!

What exactly is he doing to those who visit but don't sit still on the couch?

As for the dog aggression, well...that's not terribly unusual. Mine is hit and miss with other dogs. She loves my GSD and tolerates the cat, but strange dogs are a coin flip. As a result, she doesn't get to play with other dogs.

Pit ownership is not for the timid, they are a special breed that require a vigilant owner.

Congrats and thank you for helping the pup. Nothing more fulfilling than helping a pup in need. If you're not familiar with the breed, or it's pros/cons, there are a ton of helpful resources online to aid owners. As far as him being shy, don't try to force something, dogs are very intuitive and they usually have a reason for being shy or staying from people. Let the relationship work at the dogs pace, that way he's calling the shots and will be more confident.

Again, thanks for helping, he's a handsome fella.

Edit:
Just saw your update OP, I've got links for some sites that might be able to help, at home on one of my pc's and will post them here later tonight.

He charges at them and barks his head off. He's never done anything more then that really but considering his breed and the fact that everyone in the world believes that pit can snap a man in half with one snap of their gaping razor filled maws, I worry that he'll do it to the wrong person.

Congrats on the adoption! Agree with the collar, is that a "no-pull" harness? If not he will be very hard to control in just a harness. Look up conformation weight pulls haha. He was probably abused by a male which is why he is timid around you, and rescued by your friend(female) who he has become accustomed to which is why he is more comfortable around your roommate. Even if that is not the case the majority of dogs prefer females over males(males are usually bigger, deeper voice, more intimidating. He will warm up, just give it time and do not force it or lose your patience with him. Good job getting him neutered! Dog aggression can be a tricky thing. Pitbulls were originally bred to fight other dogs, who knows what his bloodline is or what the asshole before he was rescued taught him to do. Regardless be very careful with him around other animals/people. You now are the owner of the most hated breed in the world and as soon as anything bad happens it will be Gabriel's fault. It pained me to neuter my male but it helped with his dog aggression. He gets along with his sister and some dogs he knows but still is iffy with other dogs. I always have him on a leash and if they don't get along, they stay separated(I don't like everyone I meet either). My dogs both bark at someone if they come to my door as well. I see it as them doing their job, as long as when I let them inside the aggression stops. After a couple minutes(and a treat or 2) they are both your best friend. Depending on the guest, this may not be acceptable. It can be very intimidating to walk in someone's house and be charged by a couple of block headed hulks! If I know someone is coming I usually have them both sit by the door and keep the calm. Once I introduce them they usually are fine(no barking). My male sometime has an issue with guys he doesn't know. What I found is if my male is outside the house when people come he is perfectly fine. I think it has something to do with the way he reacts to people intruding into the house. When he is outside he doesn't feel like he has to go into protection mode, so when everyone walks in together he is fine. Again, you don't know Gabriel's history so who knows if the previous owner was trying to make him into guard dog or simply did not do something about him reacting that way to guests. What do you plan to use for training?
