I can't tell if I like him or not.

I read his Hyperion Cantos series and due to that I picked up "The Terror".

It started off very slow but once I got to about 70% in the book I couldn't put it down.

Cliff Notes:  The book was a fictional account of a real doomed arctic voyage by the English Navy.

I'm waiting on another author to release a book.  Any Dan Simmons recommendations?

I haven't read anything by him but the Hyperion Cantos. I loved it

Don't bother with The Abominable. You may think it's another cool one like the Terror, but it's super dumb.

Summer of Night was really good. Carrion Comfort and Summer of Night were kind of like Stephen King novels. They were okay, but not spectacular. Song of Kali was also not spectacular. Darwin's Blade was alright.

Flashback was pretty cool. Had some good sci-fi ideas and was a good weird-future novel. It didn't get very good reviews because all the social justice warrior reviewers didn't like the conservative ideas in it.

I struggled with Terror in the beginning as well.

The Hyperion series is my favorite of his, but I really enjoyed Olympos and Ilium as well.

Most of his stuff is decent.  It helps you get some of his references if you have a background in "classic" literature.  One of his books not yet mentioned that I give a negative review is "Black Hills".  On the other end, among his stand alone novels, I really enjoyed "Flashback".

MHO, YMMV, etc.

I never finished the terror and only read the first two hyperion books, which are my favorite sci fi books ever.

I wish hbo would do a series on the first two books

I've never read his other stuff

An HBO Hyperion series could be incredible.

There was talk at one point about someone doing a movie, but i dont see how you could do any of the characters stories justice in a movie

Not at all. You could almost do a season for each character history.

I am re-reading the Hyperion Cantos, now on the last book. I really like Illium and Olympos, as well.

I sampled it on Kindle, and Hyperion seems like a Canterbury Tales retelling, am I reading that correctly?

It borrows the form of the Canterbury Tales, i.e., the stories of several travelers on a shared journey.

Song of Kali is one of the scariest books I have read. I highly recommend it.

I loved the Hyperion books I read back in the mid 90's.

Because of this thread I'm going to try them on audio.

This.  One of my favorites outside of the Hyperion books.

I'm in the middle of rereading it as well. It's a dense read, I've forgotten a lot of it.
