Just finished this one last night.  A dandy!  It was just on the verge of being too technical for my non-techie senior brain.   Highly recommended for all!

I suspect he might mean "The Martian" by Andy Weir.
A new movie based on the book is out, unfortunately it stars Matt Damon.

The book is very excellent, one of the best hard science fiction books I've read in a long time.

You are correct, written by Andy Weir.

You would advise against wasting money on the movie then, eh?

It wasn't bad or anything but I wouldn't waste my money.  The aspects of the book that make it enjoyable don't lend themselves to a movie and you already know what's going to happen.  They would have been better off making an HBO type miniseries.

I am about 2/3rds through it now.
I remember very few books that made me laugh out loud. literally like an idiot in public. some give me a chuckle.
this and the flying circus one I read recently did just that.
