I've been trying to recall the name of a series I read in the mid-eighties.  The stories were set in a post apocalyptic United States.  

Here's what I recall (accuracy is suspect).

The main character was named Kyle Paxton, I think.

He was a a soldier exposed to something or other on a mission in South America years earlier.  He had to take some sort of medication or serum to control whatever happened to him in SA - maybe heightened senses.  He kept the meds in a refrigerator in his van which could run on pretty much any liquid that burned.  He traveled the destroyed U.S.for his 'adventures'.  There may have been an overall arc of Kyle trying to find his wife and son.

A new book hit the shelves each month, like the "Destroyer" novels.   I'm hoping someone out there knows the name of this series and can fill me in.
