The one I enjoyed the most in the last 2 decades was Yellow Eyes.
It helps to be familiar with the series though. I don't think it would be as enjoyable if not read as part of the series. |

That's a hard one. I really like a lot of older Heinlein, but I think if I had to pick my absolute favorite SF novel it would be Voice of the Whirlwind by Walter Jon Williams.

I doubt I could pick only one that would be my favorite, head and shoulders above the rest.
But if I had to pick one book to be stranded on a desert island with, I'd take Neal Stephenson's Anathem. |

Between Lucifer's Hammer, and the Falkenberg's Legion series. I'm a big Pournelle fan.

While it's certainly neither high art nor hard sci-fi, I'll be damned if I didn't enjoy the Eisenhorn Trilogy by Dan Abrams more than just about any other science fiction I've read. I've read better books that were better written, but like I said, this one was probably the most fun.

Starship troopers by Heinlien followed by Enders game likely because I read it when I was a kid and have some childhood memories associated with it. But starship troopers still takes number one by a long shot.

The follow up on the Tines world was good too, but not quite on the same level. Hope there's another!! |

We were all excited when he brought some pages of Armor 2 to one of the ConDFW's and read them in a session, but I suspected it was never going to get off the ground when he brought the same pages 2 years later and read them again. He used to drop ideas about projects that he was "just about to get published" all the time. There was a novel he wrote half of right after Vampire$ called Gabriel, short stories called The Crusader Device and Godling, a series about a detective who lived on a boat, etc. The only things I know about that he ever actually finished were his sequel to Vampire$ (called Werewolve$), and a thriller called Lady, both written as screenplays. I have about 100 pages of the Armor sequel, but it's not enough to ever really get into anything. A bit of background on Jack Crow and some details of Felix/Lewis's early days on Sanction. |

Starship Troopers (getting ready to read it again).
Armor was good (John Steakley) but not as good as Starship Troopers. Lately I'm finding I like Old Man's War. I've read it about 3 times in the last 3 years or so. So many good books. I like the Posleen War series. I think Yellow Eyes and Watch on the Rhine are my two favorite ones of the 8 or 9 that have been written so far. |

I have to agree Snow Crash is really good, but for classic science fiction, if I can pick only one, I would go with "Neuromancer" by Gibson, and if I can have some runners up I would go with Heinlien's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" and "Stand on Zanzibar" [I am drawing a blank on the author] and H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds".

That scene may be a little mixed up in my head since it's been years since I read the book but that's the way I remember it. And I could never bring myself to read it again. Too much pain. Civilization Series (aka Lensman series) by EE Doc Smith
Giant series from James Hogan is a good read as well. Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy is always fun. Light of Other Days by Arthur C Clarke is good. Also another vote for The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Hard to pick just one.

I've been reading Pandora's Star for what seems like an eternity....started SO slow, but is now getting really good with the introduction of the Primes...my biggest gripe is the unneeded descriptions of things, FFS, I don't need driving directions to visit imaginary cities on imaginary planets! I love some of the concepts though. |

Another for Starship Troopers and Dune. The entire Honorverse is probably my favorite, though. And about 4 or 5 years ago a book called "Leviathan Wakes" came out and I just could not put it down. Then there's always Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy...
