Just finished Plutarch's Lives and I Will Fear No Evil by Robert Heinlein.

This was my third Heinlein novel, and it was pretty weird. The ending surprised me, though.

FLASHBACK by Dan Simmons, recommended right here on arfcom.

Seems slow going but enjoying it so far.  very good narrator.

EDIT: became one of my favorite reads of 2017, very good book.

The Stranger by Albert Camus. Very good short story.

I'm making another round of Raymond Chandler 'Philip Marlowe' series. And the 'Continental Op' by Dashell Hammett.

Recently finished a really good biography of The Grey Ghost and his military tactics. Really impressive stuff.

Since I loved the movie and got the book for free on Kindle Prime, I just started reading Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Still reading P. O. Ackley: America's Gunsmith, but finished Defender of the Philippines by P40 pilot David Obert.   Obert is a lucky one to have been flown out of the Philippines at the last minute. He later served in the Med. and rose to the rank of Col. in the reserves.

Che Guevara by Jon Lee Anderson.  Very detailed... to the point of putting you to sleep.  About 1/3 through it and I can tell you what grades he had in 2nd grade - again, very detailed.  So far seems to be a "just the facts" type of book - can't see a slant in any direction.

Just finished Texas: A Brief Account of the Origin, Progress, and Present State of the Colonial Settlements of Texas; Together with the Expositions of the Causes which have induced the Existing War with Mexico (whew, long ass title for a booklet similar to what Common Sense was to the American Revolution). I would guess it was written more for the American public to drum up support for the Texas Revolution. Interesting booklet.

Since Jerry Pournelle passed away on Friday, I have decided to open up a physical book for the first time in months, The Prince, which is his omnibus version of the Falkenberg's Legion books, my favorite series of his.

Just finished King David's Spaceship, known in the UK as a spaceship for the king, a sort of prequel for The Mote in God's Eye.

I usually read it before Mote, gives you a little background info, but they are unrelated.

Jack Kleiss' Never Call Me A Hero.  Autobiography of the naval aviator who bombed two carriers (Kaga and Hiryu) and one heavy cruiser Mikuma at Midway.  Great insights into CV-6 Enterprise as well as Halsey.

You are Not So Smart.

Pretty good book with short chapters on the mental mistakes you make every day. The guy is a pretty good writer.

"The G-Man" by Stephen Hunter.  A disappointing book for several reasons, the biggest being Hunter's "humanizing" characterization of the criminal Lester Gillis aka "Baby Face Nelson".  No, Mr. Hunter, Gillis was a psychopathic killer - period.  Another off turning aspect was the over-the-top "Forrest Gump-esque" ability of the main character to do at all the right things in all the right places.

MHO, YMMV, etc.

Still reading the Falkenberg's Legion series, but also reading the Westerly Gales series since the 4th book FINALLY came out this month, been waiting 4 years.

If you haven't read it, the concept is, take Horatio Hornblower, put him in the year 2500 or so after a worldwide pandemic+geological cataclysm, and have him start a Napoleonic style navy against Tripoli type pirates. Self published by E C Williams, really well written and researched, Williams was in the US Coast Guard.

The story makes references to Shakespeare's "A Mid Summer Night's Dream".  As I've comments on other threads, Simmons is an academic as well as author so he, at times, will make references to some of the classics.

In any case, 'Flashback' is one of Simmons' best.

Model Shipcraft book on the Fuso and Ise class Battleships (Vol. 24) by Brown.  Good text, great photos and drawings of the ships as they were built and refitted.  It's a worthy companion to the other 23 Model Shipcraft books.  Because it includes model ships built and painted by professionals, they're handy books to have.
