Im very surprised there are no threads about this series. Im getting ready to start on my 3rd reading after taking a few years off from them. Its a great series if you are interested in the Navy of yesteryear, the Nepolionic Wars, the War of 1812, The British Empire, and naval warfare tactics of the 1800's.

Its a 21 book series and runs from Jack Aubrey's promotion to Master and Commander of the HMS Sophie to his dismissal and reinstatement to the Royal Navy to breaking his flag of the South Africa Squadron.

The author very accurately portrays several historic naval battles including the HMS Java vs USS Constitution, The Battle of Cape Santa Maria, and several others.

I read the first book in the series recently and enjoyed it. Not sure if I liked it enough to read the other 20 books though.

the first one is not so good
keep going, it gets much better
book 2 is better than book 1 by a LOT
Desolation Island is the best (I think it's #5)

GREAT series of books.

The only thing I dont like about the series (and i have read it through 3 times and started on the 4th) is sometimes the old style English is a bit hard to read and when he has them talking french I have no idea at all.
