Peace Warrior previously mentioned in this thread is back on the Amazon Top 100 Free today.

Synopsys: It’s the mid-21st century when Sergeant First Class Grant Justice is killed during an ambush on an enemy tank column. Six hundred years later, his body is retrieved from the frozen, arctic lake where he perished. Re-animated by a team of scientists, Grant awakens to a civilization that has abolished war. A civilization that has outlawed violence and cherishes Peace above all else. A civilization that has been enslaved by an alien race called the Minith.

I read it as well. Didn't think it was 5 star material but it was OK for being free. Everyone has their own tastes as such some will like it others will not. Prime example is "Mr. Ruins: A Thriller" and "King Ruin: A Thriller" both previously on the Amazon's top 100 free list. Both get high marks (for so few reviews) yet I barely finished the first one, thought it was terrible, and only made it a dozen or so pages into the second one which I thought was equally terrible before moving on to other ebooks. <shrugs>

Note the following book collection on today's Amazon Top 100 Free only has six reviews, all five star which is suspect.

The Heretic (Beyond the Wall Book 1)

Synopsis: Centuries have passed since the First Cataclysm ended life on the blue planet. Humanity’s survivors are now dispersed among distant colonies, thousands of light years from the barren, frozen rock that was once their home.

A new Republic has formed – one in which freedom no longer exists. In return for the protection of the Consulate Magistratus, citizens must concede their rights absolutely. The Magistratus controls interstellar travel, access to technology – even procreation. Every citizen is implanted with a device to monitor their location, health and nutrition and emotions - perhaps even more. Organised religion is forbidden. All crime is punished by banishment, or a lifetime of penal servitude aboard the Kolyma prison fleet.

Humanity’s true history survives only in whispers of a secret archive.

Yet there are those who preach a new religion and who want to be free.

Zombie Fallout

It started in a lab at the CDC (Center for Disease Control), virologists were so relieved to finally have an effective vaccination against the virulent swine flu. Pressure to come up with something had come from the highest office in the land. In an attempt at speed the virologists had made two mistakes, first they used a live virus and second they didn’t properly test for side effects. Within days hundreds of thousands of vaccinations shipped across the US and the world. People lined up for the shots, like they were waiting in line for concert tickets. Fights broke out in drugstores as fearful throngs tried their best to get one of the limited shots. Within days the CDC knew something was wrong. Between 4 and 7 hours of receiving the shot roughly 95% succumbed to the active H1N1 virus in the vaccination. More unfortunate than the death of the infected was the added side effect of reanimation, it would be a decade before scientists were able to ascertain how that happened. The panic that followed couldn’t be measured. Loved ones did what loved ones always do, they tried to comfort, their kids or their spouses or their siblings, but what came back was not human not even remotely. Those people that survived their first encounter with these monstrosities usually did not come through unscathed, if bitten they had fewer than 6 hours of humanity left, the clock was ticking. During the first few hysteria ridden days of The Coming as it has become known, many thought the virus was airborne, luckily that was not the case or nobody would have survived. It was a dark time in human history. One from which we may never be able to pull ourselves out of the ashes from.

Salt: A Post-Apocalyptic Mystery

Former cop, Eva Morgan, was on a mission to bust a drug smuggling ring when her ship was caught up in a storm unlike humanity had ever seen. When the fog finally lifted, she discovered there was no longer a home port to return to.

A series of climactic disasters had conspired to drown the planet.

Now Eva and the crew of a flotilla of vessels shipwrecked against a mountain must battle for survival every day. They think their main enemy is the salt in the water surrounding them, corroding their ships and harbouring a devastating bacteria.

But when one of Eva’s closest friends is murdered, suspicion and hysteria rips through the fractious society. If they are to survive long enough to repopulate a world in crisis, they must first find the killer within, and unravel the mysteries of this new existence.

I am subscribed to BookBub... it has become a joke, I read the descriptions to my wife and we have a laugh. Some of the plots are laughable, many are super repetitive.

Edit: not all of them, naturally. But sometimes half are awful.

The reality is that almost every fictional book written these days is a rehash of themes from prior books and most fictional books written in the future will be the same.

Lets extend your complain about how many "zombie/apocolypse/super secret terrorist killer known only to the president books do we need" out a bit. How many detective solves murder books do we need? How many cook books do we need? How many books on computers, or business subjects do we need. How many law books do we need? See where this goes? Your complain could be leveled against any book written. If no one wrote books because the theme has been covered before, there would be few books published or released for us to read.

Just because we here are frustrated with the types of books that are released doesn't mean others are. Obviously there is a market for these books, otherwise no one would write them. I used to love reading Clive Cussler books in my youth, but stopped a long time ago because every book he (and his co writers) write is a variation on previous books. The story lines are predicable. Yet Cussler cranks out  one or two books a year based on this same theme. Someone is buying and reading them. Same goes for most of the top authors. Many of their books are similar in theme to their previous books yet people continue to buy and read them.

The Trio survived the initial fall, and built a refuge, they thought they had reached safety, but only to find themselves once again abandoned and surrounded by the primals. The fight continues as Brad and his men struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where the enemy is far more dangerous than anything they had been trained for.

DIY Prepper: How To Secure Your Home, Protect Your Family, And Survive Any Disaster

Doomsday preppers are often seen as extremists, fanatical people who have completely lost their grasp on reality. Painted as mentally unstable doom and gloom mongers, many people see preppers as out of touch lunatics and write them off as crazy. Before you decide that preppers are an unhinged bunch of overzealous, undereducated freaks, there are a few things you should know. Once you understand just how vulnerable the modern economy is to something as seemingly simple as transportation disruption, you may think twice about prepping and decide everyone needs to prep for a worst case scenario the government would be powerless to resolve quickly enough to keep you and your family safe.

This book will cover:
Why You Should Always Prepare
DIY Weapons When Your Ammo Runs Out
What to do when the ammo runs out
DIY Home Security
DIY Fire Starting
DIY Food Supply
DIY Water Storage And Filtration
DIY Bug Out Bag
DIY Ways to Start An Emergency Fire

HIDDEN under the burning Arizona desert is the grandest ‘Science-City’ ever created, and all hell is breaking loose. Using stolen genetic research, terrorists are unleashing a devastating attack on the civilian scientists, on their families, on their children. No one is spared. BARELY one hundred and fifty souls survive the first seven minutes. Injured and wounded, limping or carried, they are frantically battling from minute to minute for their very lives. The odds are stacked against them, but one thing is in their favor. CAPTAIN Alexander Coleman is just minutes away, and he’s not coming alone. He commands a full platoon of Special Forces Marines. His estranged wife, Vanessa, and eight year old son, David, might still be alive in the besieged underground complex. The chance they both survived is slim, but that’s more than enough.

When I was a kid I won awards for the most library books read over the summer, several years in a row.  In the 50 years since then I have read thousands of books.  But none in the last year or so.  I found that there is no mystery in it anymore when I can guess what is coming up because I have seen it somewhere else before.  I guess it is a combination of my experience reading and the fact that no one bothers coming up with original ideas anymore...I only watch this thread anymore for survival/homesteading stuff...

I have found some good variations in the sci-fi, fantasy, and alternate history genres still, although fantasy seems to be getting repetitive among its own sub-genres, and a few sci-fi ones are also rehashes.

You're absolutely correct.

Which is why my time spent reading has probably dropped by 50%.

Who knows?  You might enjoy it.

I have found some good variations in the sci-fi, fantasy, and alternate history genres still, although fantasy seems to be getting repetitive among its own sub-genres, and a few sci-fi ones are also rehashes.

Like MongoCaver i too read a multitude of books during the elementary in to jr. h.s.. One time i staterd @ A and worked my way to Z in the sci-fi section. I'm thinking It's time to revisit those days, be it at the library or on line.
One great thing about those days ( mid 60's)  when you opened a book (except a comic book)  once you got to the end, it was. THE END. I do enjoy a good read where the writer has your attention , looking forward to the next in the series. There are talented writers out there just not as many.

How many SHTF or TEOTWAWKI  books DON'T have a female character who JUST HAPPENS TO BE a doctor, surgeon, 2nd - 3rd year intern. OR an anti-gun wife, girlfriend, that REFUSES to accept their spouses reasons for trying to keep them alive. Unable to UNDERSTAND the need to have a gun at all. Seeing how SOMEONE from the government will be along soon to get things back to "The way they were before"  OR IF only Bob hadn't have shot that unfortunate person trying so valiantly to get some of the food Bob had been hoarding. Why couldn't he be Reasonable and see everyone needed help.

Among the Dead and Dying (Among the Masses Book 1)

Rumors of an army of dead led by a man calling himself The Scholar have proven true, and even the most secure cities are no match for his undead soldiers. The Scholar's goal is to crush the world of the living, but he also wants to capture a simple baker named Saffi, though no one seems to know why.
Saffi's father vows to protect his daughter, and flees The Scholar's path, only to fall prey to other evils of the world outside the walls. In just one day's time, Ward and Saffi's lives will be forever altered, and the secret about why The Scholar wants her will be revealed.

Fictional thriller: Operation Ivy Bells: A novel of the Cold War

A super-secret, off-the-books spy organization; a security-clearance starting at Top Secret and going up from there; an attack by giant squid during a thousand-foot dive while breathing an exotic gas; a cat's whisker escape from death during a three-day decompression – and that's just the first two chapters of "Operation Ivy Bells," before the action really gets underway.

In a fast-paced, personal narrative, J.R. "Mac" MacDowell details a breathtaking series of events during a super-secret intelligence gathering operation at the height of the Cold War. Riding the nuclear submarine "Halibut," Mac and his saturation diving team surreptitiously enter the Soviet-controlled Sea of Okhotsk on a proof-of-concept mission. They install a tap on an underwater communications cable at 400 feet, and narrowly escape death when a storm snaps "Halibut's" anchor cables. They retrieve missile parts from a Soviet missile-test splash-zone, getting caught in a sonar-web set by the crafty skipper of an old Soviet diesel submarine. Mac's divers temporarily disable the sub, and "Halibut" escapes to Guam, dogged by the sub Skipper.

Having proved the concept, they return in a "Halibut" outfitted with skids so she can sit on the bottom to attach a 12-thousand-pound pod to the cable for future retrieval. In the missile splash-zone, they lock in deadly underwater combat with Soviet divers. With the free world at stake, they capture one and kill the rest. "Halibut's" submariners and saturation divers finally return home without ever publicly revealing their crucial contribution to winning the Cold War, receiving an unpublicized Presidential Unit Citation.

Blending personal experience and real-world events in a fictional wrapping, "Operation Ivy Bells" offers a never-before-seen glimpse of these heroic men fearlessly facing death to gather the intel that tipped the scales to win the Cold War.

Emergency Exit: 2020 (2020 Series Book 1)
2020 - Emergency Exit (Book 1 of the 2020 Trilogy)

My wife, Sophie, lost her life four years ago. If she hadn’t, we’d both be dead now.

It’s as simple as that, but also far more complicated.

The cool October day was typical for autumn in the Midwest—a little sun, a little rain, a little wind. My parents, our kids, and their friends had gathered at my lakeside cabin to celebrate and honor Sophie...It was truly a great—stress-free—day.

And then suddenly it wasn’t.

Everything changed on the evening drive into town.
Everyone—everywhere—was dead. Animals too. There was no destruction. Just…death.
Absolute death.
The cause was unknown until we fled back to the cabin and caught the coded message on the radio—a chemical attack.

A what? In northern Minnesota? In America?
How did we not know about this? How did we survive? Was anyone else alive? Anywhere?

The extent of the contamination—the devastation—was largely unknown. The exact perpetrators were also unclear. But as terrible and incomprehensible a reality as that was, the message indicated it was about to get even worse.

An army was coming. Maybe even several.

I wanted to laugh, to cry. I wanted to do anything but face what we’d just seen. I looked at my dad, my son—Danny—and his best friend…the only ones in our group with any preparation for something like this. I glanced at the newest issue of “The Survivalist” magazine on the coffee table. I’d subscribed as a joke. It was humorous reading at the time. I might actually need it now. This was real. Far too real.

And unreal. Somehow—some way—the nine of us were supposed to try to get to Hawaii—the last safe place in America.

I did laugh then. And maybe even cried. Hawaii? From Minnesota? Glancing around the room that night, though, I knew for certain we didn’t have a choice.

The only way for any of us to live was to leave..

Medicinal Herbs: The Ultimate Guide to Medical Herbs that Heal
Get To Know Medicinal Herbs
Before the advent of synthetic medicine and modern pharmacology, many people all over the world have relied on medicinal herbs to treat different ailments. In fact, different civilizations in the ancient world have documented their use of medicinal herbs to treat different maladies from wounds, burns, insect bites to depression and malaise.

Medicinal herbs have been tested by time for their efficacy and unlike synthetic medicine; medicinal herbs are not toxic on higher doses. There are many medicinal herbs people use all over the world and it is important to be educated in the different kinds of medicinal herbs around us. With this book, you will be able to learn the following:

Learn about the different kinds of medicinal herbs used in every continent. The herbs listed in the book are listed in different categories relating to which continents they are commonly used.
The book also lists the different benefits that you can get for a particular medicinal herb. They are listed in bullet forms so you can easily read the benefits that you can out of using a particular herb.
The book also included the different ways to use medicinal herbs to get the most benefits out of the plant.
Medicinal herbs are very important because they provide natural chemical compounds that can be used to treat different maladies. This is the reason why modern pharmacology is raving about tapping different medicinal herbs and using them to develop powerful drugs. The thing is that if medicinal herbs are used to make powerful drugs, then they should be effective in their natural form. The use of medicinal herbs is therefore logical. After all, nature is designed to be a great provider and all we have to do is to take advantage of what it provides for us.

Dystopia (Dystopia Trilogy Book 1)

In the distant future the United States has been split into two regions separated by a barren wasteland; this is the country of Dystopia. Here the individual is discouraged, freedom is an illusion, food is rationed, and everything you do is tracked by a chip implanted in your arm. This is Dana Ginary’s world.

At age seventeen, people receive their career assignments chosen for them by a government body. Forced to work at the Waste Management Plant because she was declared too individualistic, Dana finds herself surrounded by death and brutality. Knowing her days are numbered, she looks for a way to leave the plant before she, too, becomes one of its causalities.

It is then she meets a man named George and soon finds herself caught up in a cat and mouse game between the resistance and the Dystopian government. Dana finds herself faced with an agonizing choice of whom she will betray and whom she will save: her friend George, her parents, or herself.

The Atomic Sea: Volume One: An Epic Fantasy / Science Fiction Adventure

A thousand years ago, the sea began to change, and the change spread.

Now the boiling, toxic, lightning-wreathed Atomic Sea has encompassed every ocean on the planet, and the creatures that live in it have become mutated and unnatural. The sea's taint can infect any human who comes in contact with it or with unprocessed seafood, killing them . . . or altering them. No one knows why the sea has become this way or what it portends, only that it's irrevocably changed the world.

Meanwhile, world war has erupted, and the small country of Ghenisa, like many others, is tottering on the brink of collapse under the onslaught of the Empire of Octung. Middle-aged widower Dr. Francis Avery is aboard a military whaling ship far out on the Atomic Sea when a series of murders onboard propels him down a rabbit-hole of danger and terror unlike any other.

Soon he becomes aware of a spy on the ship, but that's just the beginning. With the help of the grizzled whaler Janx and a mysterious woman named Layanna, he will embark on an epic quest to save Ghenisa from Octung and unravel the secrets of the Atomic Sea.

No reviews yet for the following book: Food Drying: The Ultimate Guide

Food dehydration delivers the vast majority of foods with the same vitamins and minerals as their fresh counterparts, in a remarkable array of concentrated flavors, nutrients and enzymes. According to health professionals, "The dehydration process retains almost 100% of the nutritional content of the food, retains the alkalinity of fresh produce and actually inhibits the growth of microforms such as bacteria." The shriveled state of dehydrated vegetables may make them seem less appetizing than their fresh or frozen cousins at first glance. However, drying vegetables for later use is one of the oldest and easiest methods of food preservation.

Homemade Cheese Recipes: Techniques for Savory, Gourmet Homemade Cheese Recipes (The Easy Recipe)

So what is cheese exactly? Cheese is a dairy food that comes from the pressing and processing of the fats found in milk. There are hundreds of different kinds of cheeses from around the world, and the way they’re created is through the different types of milk and other ingredients used to make the cheese, as well as the numerous types of processing that these ingredients go through. This results in cheese that tastes different, looks different, and feels different. In fact, there’s a culture around cheese (not the biological kind, the social kind) that is centered on the qualities and tastes of different cheese. It’s kind of like wine tasting but with crazier tastes. To get the ideal cheese taste, cheese connoisseurs suggest keeping cheese in a fridge until ready to serve, at which point you should allow it to warm up to room temperature.

How To Deal With Crazy People: The Ultimate Survival Guide On How To Deal With The Psychopath, Sociopath, Narcissist And Other Disturbed People

We’ve all seen them. The people who walk to the beat of a different drummer. We’ve shook our heads and wondered just what they were thinking and why they do what they are doing. We’ve puzzled over their behaviors, questioned them and in some cases asked them to stop an annoying behavior but they quickly fall right back into the same patterns. It’s great when we can watch from afar and not have to deal with these unusual people or we can just close up shop and walk the other way, but unfortunately, these people are a part of our world and cannot be avoided.
These crazy people could be in our immediate families or at work. We encounter them at school and at the store, no matter where we go we cannot avoid their crazy behaviors, odd views and somewhat eccentric behaviors. In his book entitled “How To Deal With Crazy People” author James Wilcox examines in great detail the different types of crazy people that you may encounter in your life and how to deal with them if they cross your path.

Critical Error
When
top CIA operative Sam Baker rescues a kidnapped CNN reporter and her
cameraman from the hands of Palestinian terrorists, he uncovers a plan
to devastate Israel. Unable to stop the attack in time, Israel is rocked
to the core as over 4,000 of its youngest and most vulnerable citizens
are slaughtered.
Four years later, retired and enjoying a new
life, his own family is slaughtered in a bungled attempt on his life.
Dealing with his would-be killers, Sam sends a warning to his brother,
Senator Charles Baker, a presidential front-runner, that he too is about
to be assassinated. Sam's hunch is right and thanks to the quick
actions of a Secret Service agent, the Senator is saved. Sam is left
with no choice but to leave his new life and revisit a life he had left
far behind.
After the devastating attack on its children,
Israel's leaders unleash an old and top secret plan in retaliation -
'Project Ararat'. Rebecca Cohen, mother of one of the slaughtered
six-year-olds and ex-Mossad assassin begs to be allowed to help in
whatever way she can. With vengeance driving her on, Rebecca uncovers an
even greater risk to her country and to America. The terrorists have
managed to secure five nuclear weapons and plan to strike Israel and
America
As Sam and Rebecca unravel the truth, their paths weave
perilously together and they become unwitting pawns as their governments
are more deeply embroiled in events than anyone would have thought
possible.
As the nuclear deadline looms, we find out just what happens when you push a country too far...
I just finished The God Complex.  I believe it was on the free list a few weeks ago. Very good and interesting read.  Good character development, good action, unexpected twists and turns.  I really enjoyed it.

I also thoroughly enjoyed America's Trust.

Left Alive #1
Adults only due to graphic violence and sexual situations.

Book 1 of 3

The world is dead. Plants gone. Animals gone. The air is thick with dust and ash. Water has turned to murky cesspools of death and decay. Life and Earth as we know it are gone—at least all the good parts.
It’s been almost a year since the first signs that we killed our planet began to arise. Order and humanity are gone now, replaced by vigilante justice and survival at all costs. Nine months have passed since the quarantines were put in place. Six months since we realized it was too late, and just after that the governments of the world fell.
That was nearly seven billion people ago, and now Charles has decided it is time to pack up and leave in search of the one thing still worth living for—his daughters.
With rumors of roving bands of cannibals, and even zombies, he knows making the journey is a long shot, but he has to try. He promised their dying mother that he would keep them safe and has every intention of doing just that, come hell or hungry zombies.
In a soulless world filled with nothing but pain and death, will his determination be enough to see him through to the end?

Scifi from today's Amazon Top 100 Free:
Test of Magnitude (The Torian Reclamation Book 1)

Welcome to the Tora star system, home of the spectacular Cardinal-4 space station overlooking Amulen and Banor, twin worlds that share the same orbit. One visit and you'll understand why this station is the pinnacle of Torian achievement and a wonder of the Erobian Sphere.

Unfortunately, your timing isn't great. Many centuries of peace and prosperity are on the verge of collapsing for members of the Erob coalition as signs of the first interstellar wars loom. The half-breeds tell us it is because we are now forsaking the ancient law, and have thus allowed an evil infection to begin spreading through the galaxy. But those Erob half-breeds have always been a little over-dramatic, haven't they?

Brandon Foss, an unhappily married Virginian in his early thirties, awakes from a strange dream to discover he has been abducted from Earth and kept in cryonic preservation on Amulen for two decades. One other resuscitated human is with him, a real knucklehead who almost seems as alien to Brandon as their reptilian captors. A friendship of convenience forms as the two Earthlings soon become unwittingly intertwined in Torian politics and military affairs--at a time, it turns out, when the Torians desperately need just such intertwining.

This full-length space-adventure novel has been professionally edited and specially formatted for all Kindle devices (including the latest Torian lightpads). We promise a smooth and enjoyable electronic reading experience, complete with a click-able table of contents. Download it today and embark upon your own personal test of magnitude.

The Last Layover: The New Homefront Volume 1

REVISED AND EDITED 12/15/14 - The Last Layover is the first book of The New Homefront series where patriotic Americans struggle to survive in a collapsing world, while taking a stand against the evil and tyranny that quickly follows. The Last Layover is a fiction novel based on real places and potential scenarios where an out of control government pushes America to the brink of financial and social collapse. This vulnerable state allows the unthinkable to happen, causing the comfort, security, and conveniences of our modern first world society to quickly come to an end. Imagine yourself far from home when the world suddenly changes. Just think back to Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and other such recent events, and you can see just how quickly society breaks down. Those situations even occurred with the nature of the emergency being confined to one specific geographic area, where help is just the next town or state away. Now also think about how that scene would play out if help was not going to come. What if those who you would look to for help had their own emergencies to contend with, leaving you and those around you to fend for yourselves? What about all of those modern conveniences of society like ATM’s, point of sale debit/credit card readers, cell phones, and the internet? What if it all went down while you were away from home? What about our food supply chain? How much food does your family have at home to get them through if the shelves were to go empty? How much do you have with you? Will it all go bad without electricity? Do you have what it takes to defend yourself and those around you when society takes an ugly turn and violence becomes necessary for survival? Those are a few of the things that this book helps you think about.

In The Last Layover, an airline crew finds themselves on an overnight layover in New York City, far from their homes, when a series of events take place that bring our modern society to its knees. Join them as they face the dangers and difficulties of trying to make their way back to their homes and families in a rapidly deteriorating society, without our modern transportation and communications infrastructure, all while dealing with the lawlessness and violence that quickly ensues in a desperate and broken society. Discover with them the dark side that humanity can quickly take, as well as the good that can come from faith, family, and friendship.

The Assassin's List (The Adam Drake series Book 1))
THE ASSASSIN'S LIST is book one in the Adam Drake series - a headline-current thriller about homegrown jihadist assassins and a timid, PC correct government. An assassination of the Secretary of Homeland Security is planned. Adam Drake, an attorney with Special Forces training and experience, uncovers the plot while investigating the murder of a client's secretary. When the FBI won't act on his suspicions, Drake takes on a well-funded terrorist sleeper cell, posing as an international security service, to head off a string of assassinations on a long list of America's VIP's. THE ASSASSIN'S LIST is a fast-paced counter terrorism thriller that will satisfy your craving for action and make you think about terrorists living among us.

Never Say Spy (The Never Say Spy Series Book 1)
Book 1 of the NEVER SAY SPY series

Despite her penchant for weapons and ripe language, Aydan Kelly’s resumé reads ‘bookkeeper’, not ‘badass’. She’s leaving the city to fulfill her dream of rural tranquillity when she gets carjacked by a man who shouldn’t exist.

When RCMP officer John Kane kills her would-be abductor, Aydan thinks her troubles are over. But Kane’s investigation implicates her in an international espionage plot, and criminal charges become the least of her worries when she’s targeted by the very spies Kane suspects her of aiding.

Pity her enemies. Because nobody’s tougher than a middle-aged woman who wants her dream back.
