Alright, so I've read Starship Troopers and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

Which of his books should I pick up next?

Stranger in a Strange Land is a must read.

Time Enough for Love, Farnham's Freehold, The Number of the Beast, The Cat Who Walks Through Walls.
Go back for some of the classics; Red Planet, Rocket Ship Galileo, Starman Jones, Have Space Suit—Will Travel, Methuselah's Children.

It's all good.

The last few books Heinlein wrote got a bit odd in places but even they're still good, though it became apparent that Heinlein was
getting rather deviant sex-obsessed in his advancing age.

ALL his early and mid period works are good. ALL of them. You can't go wrong if it's a Heinlein title.

Just find the Heinlein section at the local book store and pick out the first title you see that you haven't read.

Skip Stranger in a Strange Land.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is my favorite book of all time, but Stranger was complete garbage.

All good suggestions but his later works start to get out there a bit.

Tunnel in the Sky is good for a short fun read - go with that next.

IMHO all of his "Junior" books were GREAT. Farmer in the Sky, Have space suit will travel, Glory Road, so on and so forth.

Also Variable Star, was good, it was outlined by Hienlien but never written, and the estate turned it over to Spider Robinson to finish.

As mentioned, some of the later stuff gets pretty out there. I liked Stranger, but books like Number of the Beast, and Farnhams Freehold get out there. Still GOOD, just read the other stuff first.

All Heinlein novels are good, in the sense that even one of his lesser works is as good or better than what other authors produce. Having said that, try the following:

Tunnel in the Sky
The Puppet Masters
Citizen of the Galaxy
Have Spacesuit, Will Travel
Stranger in a Strange Land
Glory Road
Friday

And a collection of short stories, Expanded Universe.

Glory Road was indeed one of his better ones.

"By His Bootstraps" IIRC, was the title for and part of a book of shorts that were all pretty good.

I wasn't really particularly fond of ANY of the Lazarus Long books.

Starship Troopers was still the best of them all. I need to read it again.

Stay well clear of "Number of the Beast". That thing was just plain twisted, and not even a particularly coherent story.

I agree, Author self indulgence turned ugly.

I disagree, but it should be read. This is the mark of a true master. Starship Troopers and Stranger in a Strange Land are SUCH different works. Amazing that they came from the same mind.

ETA: If you want a "blend," try "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. Part "1984," part "Stranger in a Strange Land." A must read.

After those two??

Well, to stay with his 'greats', I would say Stranger in a Strange Land. To be honest, it wasn't my favorite.

Try The Past Through Tomorrow:A Future History of Man. Is a big thick book of his short stories. He wrote them in such a way that they all kind of go together and build on one another. Some outstanding short story gems in there like The Man Who Sold the Moon, Logic of Empire, The Green Hills of Earth, Methuselah's Children. Gosh, I could go on and on. Just all around good stuff.

Farnham's Freehold. A must read for any paranoid AR15.commer prepper.

Glory Road, that's a good one.

Time Enough for Love continues on with Woodrow Wilson Smith (aka Lazarus Long, possible the greatest character in all of sci-fi).

Hard to go wrong with Heinlein. Except, as another poster mentioned, you can read one book. Pick up another and it will be VERY different. He just had a broad range and depth to choose from.

There are Heinlein haters out there. They're just jelly.

Personally, I'd say that you can't go wrong with any Heinleins (though Stranger in a Strange Land is not one of my favorites and isn't even on my bookshelf here).

That being said, I'd definitely agree that it's worthwhile trying out some of his juveniles if you ahven't before. Tunnel in the Sky, Farmer in the Sky, Rocketship Galileo, etc. He sure had higher standards for our kids back then than we have these days. look at places these days where it's considered a win if the kids just make it through high school, vs kids in his juveniles that help build a rocketship, or get sent off on solo survival courses (by choice!) on remote planets, etc.
